Hi all, i was wondering if anyone could cast any light on this issue im having with heat, i am presuming it is a heat issue:

bought a few months back compal chassis number NBLB2 with ati 5650 4 gb 1333 RAM and i5 540m

Ive just started playing RIFT today and it will last about 5 mins then shut the whole system down, i have installed new drivers, checked all obvious things...im playing it in med/high settings and its smooth - its not as if its struggling graphically infact the opposite - its just getting extremely hot i think (90-120c) when it shuts of - i was using core temp to look at temps...also checked the graphics mhz freq to see if it was ok and that is set as standard 550/800 so i am just very confused as to why im overheating so quickly

i am playing on a solid wood table also and have tried suspending the laptop even so there is air underneath....!!!

is it possible that the game is working the components, and that this chassis cooling system can not handle the components flat out?

any help appreciated

i`ve had similar probles with my laptop (sounds like the same spec except i`ve got a i7 720) My processor was getting quite warm (using core temp too) but nothng compared to the ATI card, that got realy hot, tho not quite 120C. I use compressed air to blow over the fin just to remove any dust particles that have got caught in there but still sometimes, depending on what game i play, it still get what i`d consider really hot (left palm really sweaty all the time, thats where the graphics card sits) normally around 78-80C but i put it down to the laptop cooling thing. I guess that all the time its working theres not much of a real problem other than excess stress on components. If you find anything that helps i`d be interested in hearing it. I run mine on a cooling pad (with 2 fans) and that seems to help a little

Haha i think i've solved the issue and im wondering how many other people have this issue - heres what i found:

After pulling my hair out and applying after sun to my lap i removed the back plate to see if i could find out why it was getting toooo hot...there was a little bit of dust which i removed BUT then i saw it... on the vent that sits directly on top of the fan there is 2 sections covered with a black film (looks and feels like photo negative paper -black)
On my laptop only ONE side was removed...i carefully cut out the other side giving me 2 vents open on top of the fan ( i presume it can now intake air alot faster ) this completely removed the over heating and i can whack on settings without my legs melting...

I hope that this helps :)

(also wandering why it wasnt removed while being built :( )
