View Full Version : Newbie Needing Spec Advice
Hi. Looking at the following spec to be used for video editing (vegas movie studio HD platinum) and playing the odd game (Flight Sim X) any comments appreciated. Have i got the right bits in the right places, ie is Cooling and Power Supply sufficent and will the software run smoothly. This spec is at the top end of my spend limit.

Processor - fine
Mobo - fine
RAM - i'd go for Kingston 6GB 1600Mhz
Gfx - fine (although i'm an nvidia user) :P
HDD - I'd say deffinatly use the 6GB/s port and go for the 1TB WD1002 as it's a very good HDD. (Faster than the 3GB/s one you want there and also has a much larger cache, 64mb instead of 16mb).
Blue-ray - nice choice
Memory card - ye fine
PSU - possibly an 850? if you intend to upgrade at some point?
CPU Cooler - fenrir? then again if you;re not ocing stock would be ok
Sound - fine
Firewire - fine
OS - fine
overall nice PC :D
How have you got 8gb of ram in an i7 9 series build?? - PCS need to check the configurator pweese :)
But yea nice build :)
Thanks for replies. I will upgrade HDD (little price difference) and configurator has got 8gb ram available. If this isnt possible as you say i will down to 6gb and perhaps upgrade to 12gb at a later date.
Ye going for the 6gb @ 1600mhz ram is good because you get an extra 267mhz and 2gb modules of ram will only fall in price so the next set of kingston hyperx 6gb wont cost u as much later on. Also all ram over 1066 mhz has to be set to its frequency in bios - xmp and im sure pcs would only b too happy to set it up for u in bios :-) if u ask
ok getting close to pressing the order button but now need advice about ram. Reading another thread on 2nd page (Corsair or Samsung Ram) answer is Samsung as its more stable. Which one is best and doesl pcs set everything up properly. I have 3 options
6GB SAMSUNG DDR3 TRI-DDR3 1333MHz (3 X 2GB)
6GB CORSAIR XMS3 TRI-DDR3 1600MHz (3 X 2GB)
6GB KINGSTON HYPER-X TRI-DDR3 1600MHz, INTEL X.M.P (3 x 2GB KIT)
Thanks for the help
6GB of Kingston, by far :) The samsun runs at 1333Mhz anyway so you cant really compare the two. But Corsair RAm seems to have stability issues with the 1366 sockets atm, (hence why my RAM was changed from Corsair to Kingston). I'd say 100% deffinatly go for the Kingston, i'm looking at it right now and it looks nice, runs well, good build too, heatsink isn't cheapy :P Just make sure you ask tech to enable XMP in the BIOS for you, so that it's already configured to run at 1600MHZ if you're unsure of how to do it.
I think i have now decided on the final spec. Does everything sound right? Can someone confirm if spc will configure Bios etc when building and testing or is it something extra that must be asked for! Thanks for your help

personally im not too sure about your choice of case and I would recommend you get a 'proper' cpu cooler rather than the stock version. I have the ECO water cooler and my i7 -930 gets quite warm when playing games etc.
Should be fine, other than what Sweeney said. A better cooling system is pretty much needed. It also goes a longer way in the end, less problem with overheating.
If you had a bit of spare cash, the first thing I would change is the case - the case can have a massive impact on cooling. The case you have chosen (Fusion) is more of a Home/Office Desktop Case designed for lower-end components which don't run that hot. If you perhaps go to the Maelstrom T900 or something similar then this would be more adequate.
The stock CPU cooler will be fine, it is the cooler provided by Intel for that particular CPU. If you don't plan of overclocking then the money would be better spent on a case rather than an upgraded CPU Cooler as don't' forget, you have a powerful graphics card, motherboard, HDDs etc to keep cool too and a case would be better at this.
am taking everyones advice on board thanks. wondering if COOLERMASTER ELITE 310 BLUE CASE would keep things cool or is the MAELSTROM T900 BLACK GAMING CASE the best option then? this is getting pricey, but if you want the best.....!!!
The Maelstrom T900 is one of our most popular cases for gaming, and many of our forum members have opted for this case. The CoolerMaster Elite 310 case will also suffice, but doesn't have the large side fan.
At the end of the day it's all down to your personal taste, both are nice cases :)
Can someone confirm if spc will configure Bios etc when building and testing or is it something extra that must be asked for?? Thank you
Any BIOS settings relevant to the smooth running of the machine will be set by us.
Thanks for all the advice i have now ordered Cant wait :)
