View Full Version : Gaming Rig!
so, it's time to upgrade from my 4 year old machine to a new one!
I've had a play around with the different components however I'm not too sure which would be the best and therefore I would like to see which set-ups you guys come up with :)
I'll be using this computer, as the title suggests, mainly for gaming. I'm looking to play the new call of duty, plus a few more new releases. I'd like it to be able to run these games smoothly with good graphics.
my current budget is around the £1000 mark, maybe up to £1100 if the additional parts are really worth the extra money.
I have a monitor, mouse, keyboard and headset for gaming and therefore wont need to purchase them here.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated, however I do ask you give reasons as to why you have selected specific components.
thanks in advance. :)

OK so, with an extra £100 I could have made this better :( Dont like the 460, would have preferred popping a 470 in there but price limited me, I said no OS, as im not sure you have one or not.
HDD: 6gb/s and its only a tiny bit mroe than the 3gb/s one (I have it in my system and id recommend it)
RAM: 6GB Kingston, been problems with Corsair and XMS3 memory with X58 chipsets
CPU: i7 930, but you could possibly go for a standard quad core if you dont plan on any SLI setup in the future.
Mobo: Would obviously no longer be this X58 one if you went for your bog-standard quad core, but this is a good board for an i7 :)
GPU: Like I said, would have preferred a GTX 470 in there, but that meant preferably a better PSU for an SLI setup in the future, and thereofre up to £1300 easily.
Hope that helps ;)

okay, thanks for the quick replies guys!
I have to say I'm liking the look of your suggestion Sleinous, however i would like windows 7 as I'm currently running XP which is in need to updated :P
i was thinking of getting a 2GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX460 myself, however i do plan on adding a second graphics card in the future when the funds are available. I'm guessing this changes things a little and i probably should have mentioned that in the OP.
would these additions be costly? i do have monies available to pay for the additions, however i would like to gain the best performance possible for the least amount of money as you'd expect :P
yes although a corsair tx850w would be advised. Win7 would add a bit more too unless you're a university student and have a .ac.uk acc in which case its £55 for win7 ultimate x64/x86
The Corsair TX 750W PSU is fine for a second GTX 460 (No need for the TX 850w). Make sure that you get the 2GB version of the GTX 460 and if you plan on a second GPU, get another 2GB GTX 460. Also, make sure you add the Windows 7 Premium OS.

This will give you a great gaming experience, and is future ready for you to just pop in another 2GB GTX 460 when you feel the need for more power
^That's look great. Plenty of room in there for upgrading in the future.
I would also advise a external hard drive to store photos, videos and music on.
Unless you're planning on moving it from PC to PC, just a second internal would be fine possibly?
Otherwise, small, fast, reliable external hard drives such as this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/320gb-Passport-Essential-Usb2-0-External/dp/B002P6ABV0/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=computers&qid=1282656225&sr=8-2 are often simpler to carry about as you dont need a seperate power cable etc.
Although, i'd just go for a second internal anyway haha, seeing as its £50~ for external 320GB, and £55 for a 6gb/s 1TB WD internal ^^
hmm, think i might get the 1tb internal if its only an extra £55, would give me plenty space for all my bits and bobs :)
thanks for the replies guys! the computer looks awesome! :)
