hey guys

When I was searching around for the best PC builder. I noticed that, PCS being the cheapest, had very limited options per category.

For Example: When I was considering cyberpower, which to be fair has awsome freebies and case mods, had about 15-20 different CPU coolers. PCS only has 5, or 5 in my category.

Cyberpower has options such as, LED's, noise proofing, a wider span of chassis and PSU's, Better case fans etc.....

Im not saying that not doing this is bad but I want to know why PCS doesnt do this when most other companys do ?

The main difference between PCS and other companys is that their warrenty is cheaper. Heres the cyberpower and PCS warrenty

Cyberpower- £69 PCS-£5
Cyberpower - £120 PCS- £69 Something along the lines of that

There are plans, and thats about all i can say about that.

Also bear in mind that Cyberpower is a multinational

obviously PCS is only available in the UK and therefore has a smaller audience and therefore less stock space and it cannot be spread across 100s of different items, just 5 very good items

We could easily list dozens of different options in every category, but it is often a self-defeating tactic. By doing this they confuse the vast majority of customers. They also put extreme pressure on procurement of all the different parts, as inevitably certain lines will be in constraint or out of stock. We occasionally suffer from this and we list fewer items. They buy lots of small quantities of many different items and don’t get the benefit of bulk buying discounts which we can pass on to the customer. It also becomes an absolute minefield in terms of compatibility.
We would rather list a smaller number of components that we have tried and tested, that have all generally good reviews, and that we know will be compatible.

That being said we constantly update our offerings with the very latest technology, and if for example we get a lot of requests for specific components / peripherals then we will look to add these.

You could liken it to when Gordan Ramsay slams those awful restaurants for having massive menus and doing it all badly.

As Maestro says, the best policy has to be fewer options done well, and ones they know 99% of the time are fine.

Also HAS to be better for purchasing/sourcing as you arent constantly looking for 17 different types of Card Reader :)

Specific to the case mod bit, with PCS offering the option to send a case you have bought somewhere else in to be used, technically there is infiinite cases you could have as a PCS PC :D

I like how PCS works, its a user friendly site and simple to understand for newbies. I also think a good selection of options for each category. As mentioned earlier more options would confuse prospective buyers whose knowledge of computer components is relatively basic. I do, however, think that a option to have extra fans installed on your system could maybe be a cool idea, obviously at a charge from PCS. Although I do realise that you can send PCS extra components to add to your build, saying that i am looking forward to adding a fan or two to my own rig! The selecting your own case option is pretty cool, i did consider sourcing a Antec 1200 v3 for my build, however, whilst researching, the price with came to about £130. I decided against this as i could get a equally good if not better case from what PCS stock.

If pcs had any more options when building a pc i still wouldn't have made up my mind, so thankfully they didn't.

Specing a pc on this site is very easy for people with limited custom build experiance, unlike some of the sites i found when trying to build my pc.

Do we need 15 choices of cpu cooler? Probably not....

I agree with the fact that it's easier to use with less options and everything is more or less compatible with everything else, but the one area I think PCS can expand on is their cases. I know the get new ones once in a while, but I just as a personal recommendation I think a few more (extravagant) cases wouldn't hurt :)

You can choose your own case, can't get much more of a choice than that.

True, but it would be easier if PCS could just stock some more nice ones so people don;t have to go to all that effort. Yes I'm lazy.

More cases take up lots of room. This room could better used for one of the following:

a) Pool tables
b) Airhockey tables
c) Massage tables
d) Table...tables

The best feature about PCS is that you can literally build your PC from the ground up, some companies give you a standard build that you modify. I can't remember who it was but one company offers a computer at say £800 and another at £1500. Both of which you can only upgrade not down in price. The cheaper one doesn't offer you some of the options on the more expensive unit, even though they are compatible, pretty much forcing you to buy the more expensive machine if you want those features.

The problem with having a huge, exhaustive list of options is that if things aren't popular enough, they will sit on shelves and may get outdated before they are used.

So is PCS....I've seen English, Welsh, Irish and Scottish (although I'm not sure if the Scots have actually bought anything yet :)) on this site.

I like this analogy...I'm a "kitchen nightmares" fan!

Pun intended? :)

WOW, that was tricky! I just managed to post my first "multi-quote" reply. Don't know how I did it, but expect more in the near future :smartass:

I have to agree with the ease of use of this site and I think this forum is a brilliant aid for anyone (like me) that doesn't really know what they're doing. I'd like to see the case fan options on the menu's though. while im here, how does the whole case fan thing work exactly? i'm hoping to get some in my build but dont have any to send PCS, can I just ring after I've put my order in and have then put in to the build?( i assume at extra cost)

Thanks fore your help
