Hi guys

Finally snuck my mum's new laptop home from work where its been sat hiding for a few weeks and i'm having a bit of a problem.

I turned it on to try and get some wireless going, and after a short time, it shut down without me even touching it (was trying to find something to watch while faffing). Odd I thought, so turned it on, and went to log in again, did so, Windows started, and then it turned off again after about 20 seconds.

Tried 1 more time just to be sure, and left it on the "Start Windows Normally" screen for a few seconds, and it started beeping loudly at me (just a continuous slow beep). This stopped once I got to the log in screen. And of course it shut down once Windows was open and sitting idly on the desktop after about 30 secs.

Any initial thoughts on why it would turn off so quickly? I mean I am assuming it isnt heat if its happening so fast. I havent tried anything yet, as no point going blindly into it...thought i'd ask first :)

The specs are below if that helps.

Cheers

Could be a ram error, try checking if memory sticks are seated ok.
and or try them one at a time.

By...opening up the laptop? eeep :D

I can do desktops, not sure about laptops...unscrew the underside I would imagine?

Should just be a plate on the underside which is held on by screws,

the RAM is usually easy to get to so it should be directly under the panel, then unclip at either side and it should pop up, take it out and then pop it back in again

Disclaimer to the God of Sod: I am in no way saying this has definitely fixed it.

Thanks for the advice Vanth. I did indeed dig out my teenytiny screwdriver and take off the back plate (well both...did the HDD first...which was oddly covered in a thick plastic sheet? hmmm)

Anyways, prodded the RAM as I couldnt really see a way to pop it out and didnt want to force it.

BUT

I then realised I had taken the back plate off...even though the Fan is attached to it...what is this? A dangling Fan connector? I wonder if it was ever attached... :)

I carely poked it into the whole (only one it could possibly fit into to) and lowered the plate back on (fiddly business that!) and has now been running for 20 mins.

So, not saying for sure, but that may have been it!

Now...to work out how to turn Wifi on!

the wireless card may have been disconnected it should have 2 tiny sockets on the top of the card which are similar to a TV signal cable they are tiny though
