Vortex III with 4GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 680M

We are planning our Q3/Q4 schedule and as many of your are aware the 4GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 680M will be released during this period and we expect to receive stock from September onwards, according to the current schedule.

We are seeing pricing that is approximately £180 more than the 2GB HD 7970M but according to benchmark performance tests it will only be around 10% faster than the 2GB Radeon HD 7970M. Would you pay £180 for this?

    I wouldn't go near it. £180 for 10% performance is terrible price/performace

wow that's really bad and its not worth the extra money ! Unless you like the special features geforce brings such as physx which give 1 percent difference while you are playing (and not all games support it ).

I commend your approach in keeping potential customers in the loop.

I also think its smart from a business perspective to do your research to see if there will be a demand for this.

Personally I wouldnt but it but there will be a game thats power hungry and some hardcore will but it just to keep up and/or veryfy their bragging rights to friends at school.

Howeever I'm grown and cant affort to buy a vortex 3 just for games.. ~I plan to make that oney back..

ill be placing my order as soon as the 2GB Radeon HD 7970M is avaliable with 32gb 1600mhz ram.

Saying that.. im building a beast for 3ds max and also video editing etc..

With all that ram I could probably render a video in the background and play a game with fairly decent settings in the foreground.

It depends on athor details of the card like tdp, operating temperatures and batteri life. As we know for now the enduro in amd isn't working that good like nvidia optimus, And also it will depend on ingame performance coz a lot of games run better on nvdia card. Plus there is a lot od people that prefer driver stability of nvidia over amd. I think that there will be a lot of customers interested in buyng this card when it comes out, but for now on the 7970m is the way to go. hope the delay for the radeon wont be that long and i'll be having one of them soon

I've been waiting to get a new P150EM with a high end Kepler in it, rather than a rebadged and overclocked Fermi, although I wouldn't mind dropping £2k+ on a new laptop that I won't be replacing for 5+ years. Still, I hate the idea of having to wait until September, since I've been waiting before Ivy Bridge was released, it's only the Kepler card that has stopped me from ordering so far.

~ If anybody is wondering why I don't pick up a 7970, I work at a place that is CUDA mad, this won't (just) for gaming, I'll be earning my wages from it, unless they completely scrap CUDA... The joys of a wandering developer...

I certainly would pay £180.00 for a 680M over a 7970M. It is worth it for those of us who i would not necessarily label as "Nvidia Fanboys", but who have come to consider the level of compatability and efficiency of Nvidia drivers as the standard.

I have nothing against ATI and recognise that the 5870M and 6990M trumped their Nvidia counterparts in terms of price/performance ratio, however poor driver support (relative) and lack of proper vsync and triple buffering support via CCC always lead me to opt for the Nvidia counterpart.

As I currently own a 580M system and although I have been salvating over the 7970M for a good few months now, I would gladly wait until September to pick up a card that may only be 10% faster at a 50% price increase (10% overall system price increase for me), but also provides me with peace of mind.

Plus as a general rule when it comes to laptop GPU's, unless the price increase is absolutely ludicrous, always go for the best you can afford. An increase in performance of 10% may allow certain games to break the 60 FPS mark rather than sitting on the edge or just below.

I would still be willing to upgrade one of my existing Vortex II's to a 7970M if they are confirmed as working in the HM chassis and PCS are able to offer the service.

You make a very good point Dangro474 about the overall price increase, and not just the difference in cost of the card.

If you are spending £1500 on a system with 7970m and decide to change to GTX 680M then you are in effect getting a 10% performance increase for and overall 10% price increase. Seems fair to me, if you look at the laptop as whole and not seperate bits with seperate values.

But if you are going to think like that, Will it actually be a 10% performance increase over the entire system? That is why we compare these things by the lowest common denominator.

I understand that this may not be possible until a later date, but I would love confirmation that PCS will indeed offer the 680M as an option, as I would like to set money aside for it.
