7970M in a Vortex II 15.6" - It CAN be done!

According to this post by Sager (the biggest Clevo reseller in the world) they have sucessfully upgraded the P150HM to 7970M and are offering upgrade kits.

Upgrading the 17.3" version (P170HM) is slightly more complicated, as outlined in their post.

Sager has completed our testing of the AMD 7970M on Sager models NP8170 & NP8150. We are therefore pleased to announce the availability on an Upgrade Kit for these units (special conditions apply). The following conditions apply:

NP8170 (P170HM) w/ NVIDIA GPU + 120hz 3D LCD Panel AMD 7970M is not supported.

NP8170 (P170HM) w/ NVIDIA or AMD GPU + Hannstar LCD Panel, AMD 7970M is supported.

NP8170 (P170HM) w/ NVIDIA or AMD GPU + LG LCD panel, AMD 7970M may or may not be supported, special EDID Firmware may need to be flashed to the LCD panel. Sager can provide this firmware update as long as the user pays for both way shipping & labor.

I realise PCS versions of Clevo laptops use AUO screens, not LG or Hannstar, so you'd need to double check before attempting an upgrade.... but at least the wheels are in motion

True, i'd consider changing my screen if i had to though, dont think screens are too expensive.

Its good to know that my laptop can be upgraded though. When i bought it i wanted something future proof and i was too impatient to wait a month for the new kit.

I can confirm that earlier this week we were able to get a 7970M working with drivers installed in a 15.6" Vortex II chassis. If you would like to order one of these, the GPU (2GB 7970M) including VAT, collection and re-delivery, labour and installation will cost £240. We have not yet tested this on a 17.3" chassis.

Dear PCS,

I currently own a Vortex III 17" and two Vortex II 15.6" systems. Until the 680M becomes available (I'm going for a £2k spec Vortex III with 680M), I would like to upgrade one or both of my Vortex II 15" systems to a 7970M. The problem is that they were purchased though another company.


Would I be able to purchase an upgrade kit my P150HM, and would you be willing to perform the upgrade? If not I have a friend who would be able to do so if you are able to include any instructions for any necessary vbios / bios tweaks etc.

Hi can you please tell me if you have any of the 7970m's in stock for the vortex ii installation. Is the price of £240 the total price of the upgrade? When can you do the upgrade?
