It's Wise to Check the Basics

Today I decided to put my PC into sleep mode. Normally I either leave it on or turn it off. When I returned a couple of hours later and pressed the keyboard nothing happened. I tried the mouse and pressed practically all the keyboard keys, still nothing

I remembered reading on this site someone having difficulty waking their pc up and I thought "why didn't I just leave it on as usual?"

I noticed that the HDD light was flashing so I knew something was happening, but still nothing on either of my screens

Then suddenly it came to me. I'd also done something else today that I don't normally do............

    I'd turned the monitors off!!

A quick press of the on buttons and I was good to go!

turns out you cant turn a PC on when it isnt plugged in at the wall... who knew?

there was a thunderstorm overnight so we unplugged all the expensive kit (we are paranoid about surges, even with protectors lol) and i forgot to plug it back in in the morning.

This is most definitely a good idea even with protectors! My mum's house in France had protectors on everything, they had a direct strike to the telephone wires not far from the house, it came down the line and blew up her computer, modem, router and all the telephones in the house...

Some muppet (which of course you aren't Poker ) did something similar at work last week. Computer was turned off as usual at the end of the day. Came in next day saying it wouldn't turn on again (never mind the fact it was whirring...which they somehow managed to miss), and got IT to come down 4 whole flights of stairs to turn on the monitor

I swear if I had a pound for every problem that comes upstairs that could be categorised as "User Error"

And i'll just leave this here...

Just thought I'd dig this old thread up, seeing (or not) that it's kind of on topic.
