Unhappy USB 3 Port not working +++ DVD drive not working... Please help

Hi all... please can someone help me with the following two problems...

1)... i have a new 2tb hard drive that uses the usb 3 port...and since my computer has 2 of the usb3 ports, i thought id use them, but when i put the usb in the ports it doesnt recognise it... do i need to install anything for the ports to work?

    2) should a BD-ROM Drive be able to burn onto a DVD Disc?... im sure i burned a movie on a DVD once but now i can't seem to do this anymore

    What case do you have?

Where have you plugged the external hard drive in? in the back of the pc or into the case? (remember usb 3.0 ports are blue)
