My mouse out of juice and i cant find any batteries, so back to ol' wired. But only a few usb ports pick up anything.

2 front and back usb ports dont work, the others do, solutions ? please xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

If their isnt a quick fix i'm just gonna buy a usb hub and connect it to the ones that do work ^.^

Edit. K the hub's in (plugged in to the usb port that works) and now i have a mouse again wooo :p

Just out of curiousity i plugged the hub in the broken usb ports to see if it maybe the mouse that was the problem. The ports manage to pick up power when plugged in as the blue "power" indictor on the hub is turned on, but when i plug in my mouse to the usb hub nothing happens..#

ps. i'm hoping i'll be able to fix it at home, since i've grown attached to my PC

A bit more detail please Korey. The rear ports that aren't working - are they on an expansion slot cover (where graphics cards etc go)?

If that's the case, it's most likely a driver problem. It could, in theory, be a loose connection where those ports are plugged into the motherboard (if those rear ones are on an expansion slot) but it's pretty unlikely to happen to two separate sockets unless you've recently been working inside your case and knocked them or unplugged them and forgotten.

We'll start by checking for driver issues...

Can you open Device Manager and see if there are any yellow triangles - that would indicate a missing or corrupt driver. If you see the yellow triangle, right-click on the device name and select "Uninstall" from the pop-up menu. Do the same for every affected device. Reboot and Windows will try to reinstall the drivers - it may ask you to reboot afterward. Hopefully, that will sort the problem.

If it doesn't work or you have no yelloe triangles, post back - also tell us if you recently re-installed Windows as forgetting to install the chipset drivers could be an underlying cause of errors like this.

It's extremely likely that we can fix this fairly easily. There's a couple of more obscure potential causes such as power-saving settings or BIOS USB legacy settings but no need to bother with them unless the obvious things fail. (My card-reader's USB port only works properly and reliably with USB legacy suppport turned on in BIOS - on my previous motherboard, the exact opposite applied. Weird)

There is one other obvious thing to try - plug any other USB device into those ports to see if it works - just in case there's a problem with the mouse such as a loose connection that "cured" itself co-incidentally when you plugged moved the cable to another socket.

Thankyou, brilliant tips as usual...
After reinstalling them all they all work perfectly (or so i thought) until i tried to use one of the usb ports at the front... which has disabled the same four usb ports functioning...
Wierd how this usb port circled in yellow (see picture:winkiss:) somehow affects the one at the back ....

hafxfrontpanelconnector.jpg

Anyway i had a look at the port circled in yellow and one of the little metal thingy bits (excuse my tech lingo) has bent(lol) back onto itself... (aka FUBAR) so i reinstalled the drivers and they all work except that one circled in yellow... since you know it's... :smartass: FUBAR :smartass:

Oh and here's something new... I NEVER KNEW USB 3.0 PORTS ARE BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE... so how come the two at the back work and not the two circled in red (unless.... nevermind found the answer on google... no less on PCSPECIALIST.co.uk forum)

2. No motherboards support front USB 3.0 ports at the moment, they simply don't exist and they do not have USB 3.0 headers. Therefore these ports will not work. Your USB 2.0 ports however, will function fine.

I'm afraid when plugging/removing USB devices the pins do been from time to time and can lead to problems such as the one you mentioned above or even more serious ones like no post, PC not turning on etc - in this instance I think you've been quite lucky! :D

As there are no USB 3.0 headers on Motherboards at the moment, there is no where to connect the cable to internally. It's a shame really but I'm sure USB 3.0 headers will be one of those things that becomes more common as time goes on.

Looks like your case is HAF-X, so to get the 2 blue USB 3.0 ports on the front working you have to use the two blue cables you get in the box to plug into the USB 3.0 ports on the back of the PC, and then thread them through the leftmost circular grommet (there are 3) just above the rear fan and all the way to the front of the case to power up the front ports. Pretty awkward solution but works out fine once it's set up, it basically switches your back USB 3.0 ports to front USB 3.0, so if you don't mind using the backs ones anyway you're not actually "losing" any ports, as forwarding them to the front of the case uses up the back ones anyway.

Techspot.com has some images of what it should look like with proper cable management: http://www.techspot.com/mediagallery.php?f=329&sub=images&img=Image_04.jpg&full=true

Good news (I hope) - you can buy an entire replacement with all of the ports and wiring directly from Cooler Master for less than ten Euros (just over £8.50). The whole panel is on a single circuit board so it should be a doddle to install.

http://www.coolermaster.nl/shop/product_info.php?cPath=88&products_id=667

I couldn't check postage but they're a reputable company so I don't expect they'll rip you off.

[EDIT - forget to mention, DIY could risk your warranty so check with PCS first if that's a concern]

Different problem in your case because you have one of the few motherboards with USB3 headers.

Are your rear USB3 ports working? If they are, that "unknown device" is not related to USB (there's a particular driver on Asus motherboards that isn't installed by default so one particular "unknown" device is very common - we can sort that out after we've sorted this problem).

Can you look inside the case - the header for the USB3 connections is at the front of the motherboard - between the RAM slots and Sata ports (you can see a picture on page 2-2 of the manual if you still can't find it). Is there anything connected to that port?
