Not really that better. I want the i7 because I play total war games and I plan to play with massive amounts of men at the same time so the i7 really makes the difference in that situation but when it comes to gaming overall the i7 makes near to no difference.

It matters how you intend to play them. I like to increase the unit size in the games file so I can have about 200 - 300 men in a single unit. Now having 20 units on the field in your own army alone is going to be pretty laggy when combined with the graphics settings. If I play with 200 men in every unit in medieval 2 with max graphics it should be less laggy than doing the same with shogun2 becuase medieval has worse graphics than shogun 2 even at the highest settings. But if you dont change the files and stay within the games boundries then the i5 will be fine. The i7 is there just to give your PC that little push in fps when theres thousands of men in 4000v4000 battles, that with graphics set to almost max.

Vanilla supcom will still over a long match degrade to a crawl on my rig, forged alliance is a bit better but it always happens if the match goes on long enough. Sup com 2 fixed it.

Fully patched of course, there is still something like a 2gb memory limit on the original and FA and its leaky as hell. In short, its not really a hardware issue.
