Hi lads, my brother wants a PC to deal with high-performance gaming, and college work that includes programming, networking and similar stuff. He says he knows what he's doing, but I don't know if he's done his research properly. He keeps mentioning that he's worried about the case/fan/cooler setup, and is worried that his PC will overheat / get damaged. I don't have much experience on this stuff so I said I'd ask here. He said price is not an issue either, and seems pretty dead set on the CPU/GPU combo. I just don't want him spending this much money and getting a PC that may go up in hypothetical flames. Thanks!

What make and model monitor is he using? If he doesn't have one yet, what's the max budget for the monitors as that dictates the level of GPU required?

Everyone has a budget ceiling, otherwise he wouldn't have restricted it so much, so we'd need to know the maximum available for the purchase

But if budget truly is no matter, then yes, it's incredibly poorly designed. People tend not to understand PC's when they say they don't have a budget. Monitors alone go from about £150 at the entry level up to several thousand at the high end. GPU's as well on their own can cost £2000, that's just a single component. A high end cooling setup can easily cost £700

Cheers for the reply! So our sister's husband actually has a spare moniter that he's going to get for free, it's this make here. https://www.currys.ie/products/msi-...ved-va-led-gaming-monitor-black-10249231.html.

I asked him for his budget, and he said he wants to keep it under 2.2 incl VAT. I did already tell him maybe to not get the fast shipping, wait a tiny bit more time and reinvest in the actual build.

His birthday is coming up so myself and his sisters said we'd buy the mouse and keyboard and his headset and other bits like that so it's really just the PC he has to buy.

Any other recommendations would be gladly appreciated!

That’s not a bad monitor for starters, 1440p which is good, it’s an old VA which is the only negative but for free, who cares.

Give me a second and we’ll take a look

I took onboard your earlier comment that the PC was rather poorly optimised. I mentioned it to him, but I know his "research" consisted of YouTube videos about best CPU/GPU combos, so I think he honestly just picked one of them and set his heart on it.

Also, he's flip-flopping between a 750W and 850W Power Supply. According to the site the build needs only ~550 I believe. Again, he's just worried about not having enough power or cooling, and that his PC would break and the whole thing would be a waste of money. I said to him surely for his budget (2.2-2.3k incl. VAT) he should get a PC that would never have to worry about these type of things while still being insanely powerful?

Stretching the budget, below is what I would want. It adds more due to the higher end gaming CPU & cooling to support maximum performance.

Not sure if the gaming mousepad was within the scope or not, if it can be removed that will save 40+

Was also playing with it trying to get something with the 7800x3D in, but it was eating up too much of the budget when you consider you'd also probably want a H100i in there too.

I really appreciate the help! I don't know where he's going with mousepad, as we said we'd buy all the extra stuff for his birthday, so he need only focus on the PC. The problem is he seems to be discussing this build with his friends, and they recommend stuff like upgrading the motherboard, adding fans, and making everything RGB. I said I better get an opinion from people who deal with this stuff. He said he'd push the budget to 2.5k if that changes anything. He wants it to last a few years, get him through and beyond college while not having to think of upgrades for a good while! Once again, thanks so much for the help guys. I did tell him watching year old YouTube videos and taking their words as gospel wasn't the most logical idea.....

With that new €2500 budget in mind, I think Scott's second config is perfect.

Although if the mouse/keyboard mat is not needed you'll get it €2400 (or spend that extra €100 on something else).
