So, few questions.

Whats your max budget and what does it need to include?
Are you replacing an old system that you can transfer the operating system across from (Win 10 can be moved to a new machine quite easily and will save you £100).
If you already have a monitor, what monitor is it (resolution and refresh rate, or if you have actual monitor name/model number)
What are you planning on using it for? Gaming machines are different to home office machines, which are different to home multimedia/general machines which are different to CAD/Photo/Video editing machiens etc etc..

Also, are you able to post the full spec from the "post to forums" section including the link at the bottom, so its easier to make changes and suggestions.

Thanks for your reply, my son's turning 16 and he's asked for a gaming PC rather than wait for the new Xbox. Budget is £800 as it needs to be close in performance to new Xbox but with the ability to change parts/upgrade in a few years. He has a Samsung panel T28E310EX(TV without the tuner) which he uses for playing One S, was hoping he could use it for new PC

To get close to the upcoming XBox in performance would cost around £2k, no joke, it's insanely powerful with around the equivalent of a 2080 Super which on it's own is around £700

Looking at what i can find on google, thats quite an old monitor (spec list i found says its not full 1080p HD)
Should also mention £800 will mean a tight squeeze in terms of the build vs budget.

Generally, most gaming machines these days aim at 1440p, the same would be true of the new XBox and PS in that the output would be kinda wasted on a monitor that wasnt 1440p... it'll work just fine, but youre not really getting the most out of it (if that makes sense)
However, with your budget, 1080p is really gonna be as high as you can aim i think.

Is there extra in the kitty to look at a new monitor? Even if its just a minor upgrade from what you have to a full 1080p 144Hz?

You've got Spyder onboard now, so i shall bow out, trust me, he's a proper expert (i will look stupid by comparison!)
Good luck with your build, and listen to spyder...he really does know his stuff.

Really to get up to scratch for a decent 1080p 144Hz system which would be considered the absolute entry level for gaming, you will need a new monitor for around £200 and the PC will set you back around £900, so budget wise it's not really doable I'm afraid.

He would do much better with an XBox, but you'd still need a better monitor to pair with that also.

Errrr, maybe not so close to new Xbox then! I guess what I would like to know is, using my proposed spec, would this PC be better than the One S my boy had now? Also would the parts eg. Mobo and CPU allow for just changing the GPU in a couple years to achieve better gaming?

We wouldn't recommend AMD GPU's as they have ongoing driver issues causing instability and stuttering as well as all out BSODS and black screens.

Nice one, thanks. Would the rx580 be any better or is it AMD in general? Also,in general, do mobos get upgraded as frequently as GPUs or us it a case of just having all the connections you want and then it will be fine to use for years?

It's all AMD cards.

Mobo's only get upgraded when a CPU upgrade is not compatible with the board. Usually the platform (CPU, Motherboard, PSU and RAM) should be expected to last 7 - 10 years without being changed.

It's 1080p 60Hz which is extremely poor by today's standards, you really need 1080p 144Hz as an absolute minimum.

Looks like he'll be getting a part-time job for his birthday too!
What brands are good all-rounders and best value?
Last question, I promise, could he use his current panel as a second screen and would it just plug into the mobo on the spec list via HDMI?
Thanks for all your help, I've done some research and I like to think I'm not thick but it can be a bit overwhelming for newbies, the manufacturers could make things easier for people to connect parts together and how they work in conjunction with each other without having to be an expert haha

It's deffo fine as a secondary monitor, I'm using a HP 1080p 60hz (HDMI) alongside my 1440p 144hz(Displayport). I normally game on the higher spec one whilst having the tinterweb open on the other

The only way XBOX/Playstation churn out the consoles at the price they do, is via economies of scale but even then they have been known to lose money on each machine but claw it back via licensing (and in the case of the Xbox, charging for Xbox Live)

Thanks for the help, I don't use Windows at all, I either use my Pixel 3 or my boy's Chromebook for browsing so how do you view/use different screens from one PC? I guess it's a really basic thing but until you've done it it seems complex!
