Questions about the Nova

Dear all,
will it be possible to put the new ryzen cpus in the nova?
am i right in thinking that they will fit into the B450 slot

Thanks
In theory, the 5600x will be the only one that fits as the rest are all much higher TDP and the cooling won’t be strong enough. Also, it would need a BIOS update to fit them as it’s a modified b450 board which doesn’t have native support.

Hi i've seen other manufacturers put the 3950x in the nova, but pc specialist does not offer this
I was wondering why that is and if i would be able to do it myself
Best wishes

The 3950x draws a lot more power than the 3900 (around 120W vs 65W) so the chassis wouldn't be able to cool it effectively without dropping the power on it which would essentially make it no better than the 3900.

You'd need to buy on of the other SI's rigs for support on that CPU. Installing it yourself on a PCS laptop would void your warranty and I'm not even certain the BIOS would support it.

Hi, what thermal paste is used on the nova?
will i get better performance if i change it to thermal grizzly
The Nova as it's a DTR uses the higher end MX-4 paste.

Thermal grizzly may give a tiny bit better performance, but there shouldn't be any need to add it until your first repaste after a year or so of use, the MX-4 will be fine.

Hi, thank you very much for your response

this video comparison did find some benefit from the 3950x even at the lower power

That’s a different SI though so different BIOS and likely different cooling.

It’s also a very minor improvement for the increased cost of the CPU, just not worth it.

It is very likely possible to have a 3950x on this laptop, but I agree with @SpyderTracks that it is not worth it and you will lose your warranty.

It will run in eco-mode (65W) all the time, with lower clock speeds. So for gaming, the 3900 with 65W by default will perform better, some games will even perform better with the 3700x, because even though it has fewer cores, it does have higher all-core clocks. So the choice is totally up to your usage.

Regarding zen3 CPUs, only time will tell. It's still too soon to know and I think we won't have an answer to that in the next 6 months.

It would take a BIOS update either way, so we’re at the mercy of clevo to produce that. My guess is they won’t.
If it does work, why not?

My belief is that they'll try to do it not because of the current users, but because it would make them more money, since a simple BIOS update would allow them to sell the same chassis for a few more years, assuming that it can still handle an RTX30 mobile (when released)

I had been waiting for a 3950x in a laptop and saw those. I also saw the reduced power and performance. They also only list 32 GB RAM.
I received my NOVA 3900 64GB RAM yesterday and although still early days I am VERY impressed. I am comparing to a 5 year old Asus ROG i7 and the improvement is staggering.
