Gaming laptop 17.3" advice needed

Knowing the French (and I am one, via the US), they'll promise to send a QWERTY and I'll end up with AZERTY. The configuration is more expensive at the French site (around 1440 euros), but at this point given my current laptop's mess, I don't have much of a choice. I'm wondering if ordering from the US site would be a better option, or if I would still face a customs bureaucratic nightmare.

I was informed by a French operator at PCSpecialist that by selecting a US language keyboard in the customization dropdown menu, I would get the QWERTY keyboard, and that all the PCs are manufactured in the UK. He also informed me that it didn't matter from which site I ordered, the customs taxes/duties would be taken care of in the order. With that in mind, I tried ordering from the UK site, and when I tried to pay, I was informed that I hadn't added the VAT during the configuration. I couldn't find where to do that, so I finally said, screw it, and ordered from the French site.

I ended up with a configuration similar to what was recommended in this thread (the 2 M2 Samsung drives, etc.), so thanks again for the advice. I did not, however, take the pixel insurance or the Gold warranty because the final price 1448 euros was already over my intended budget. Once I set up the new laptop, I'll check out the Ubuntu Studio - that now sounds familiar to me and I probably played around with it at some point early in my recording career as Departure Street (check me out on bandcamp if you want, if you like ambient electric guitar).

P.S. Mortstiff = AJKIM - don't know how that happened.

Sure thing, here it is.

I'm a little regretful at not taking 32GB RAM, but I think for my purposes it's not really necessary. Still, I probably should have asked about that here. I'm hassling with constant crashes on my main laptop and just wanted to get this done, because I imagine I'll still have a 10 day wait or so. I don't like not having an internal optical drive, but I realize that few new laptops do anymore. I don't really have anything (yet) to plug into the C port on the new laptop, meaning I'll be two ports short of what I have now, so I just ordered a C type hub with four USB ports. Looking forward to receiving it and getting started.

You have the gold warranty.

It seems to be included automatically in the French site in the price.

Any doubts now then change the RAM now. Saves the hassle later on in taking apart.

You can go in and upgrade / amend order.

Use case? Doubt you'll ever fill the 16 GB to be honest, unless you use it for serious NLE video editing with 4K footage all day, or CAD/3d rendering with lots of things in the environment, etc.

Thanks. Sounds like 16GB will do the job, because I don't even know what that other stuff is. I'll check the price difference anyway, just out of curiosity.

It really does depend on usage, but my though is that the decent spec games now are using 16GB, so whilst its enough now, how long will it be before they say recommend spec 24gb / 32gb etc - and how long am I anticipating using my laptop for etc.

I overspecced mine - 64gb LOL - as I thought I would benefit from the extra memory 'stitching' several photos etc in Photoshop / Lightroom and doing other photography stuff - so far I have only used at maximum about 45% of my RAM in any one go (per HWMonitor). My thought now is - I have 2 x 32gb RAM so I can probably re-use these going forward anyway.

Extra cost from going from 16 to 32 is only about £50 now, but if you chose to upgrade later, it will be over £100 as you would need to replace both 2 x8's with 2 x 16s.

Looks like it adds another 53 euros, which in the grand scheme of things, isn't exactly a deal breaker. But I'll probably stick with the 16GB. I'm also a little nervous about changing the specs. When I went to the French Optimus page today, there's a message that they are now out of stock and not due in until March 3, so I'm afraid if I change the specs, I'll also delay the delivery. That's probably just paranoia, but I've been burned before changing things after the order.

About the new delivery of 3rd (valid for any 17 laptop they offer) it might affect all of us also...
Today I received a mail that my laptop wasn't near to be delivered yet to PCS (despite planned for arrival the 15th) and now they update to the 3rd of March in the webste.
I'll see in the next planned email if I am affected by this or not. Consider I ordered the 27th of Jan.

That sucks. I expect a lengthy delay one way or the other.

My configuration price today is higher than yesterday, so changing the RAM will increase the price by 72 - now we're getting into territory that's too pricey for me.

After two months of waiting for my Optimus 17.3, I have now been informed by PCSpecialist - after contacting them - that it could be months before the chassis arrives and that they are no longer even selling the model. It has been suggested that I find another model and reorder. Let that sink in for a minute.... Now, my question is - what can you advise as an alternative?

My Optimus configuration can be found here: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/foru...p-17-3-advice-needed.78495/page-2#post-569453

In short: 16GB RAM (2 x 8 GB)

1st SSD - 1 TB Samsung 970 EVO lus M.2
2nd SSD - 500 GB Smasung 970 EVO Plus
external DVD-RW
US keyboard
Windows 10 Pro
US language

They suggested I go with the 17.3 Elima Pro. 250 euros more, for essentially the same laptop I've been waiting for - unbelievable. Here's the configuration. Let me know what you think - thanks.

Come on, i answered his question ^^"

So, anyway, like i said, i think you should go with the "classical" Elimina, and not the Elimina pro (one is a clevo chassis and the other is a tongfang, and if you look on the forum, tongfang chassis may have problems)
And it's a little bit less expensive ^^"
(if you can wait some days)

edit : for the rest of your config, i'll let the "pro" of the forum answer you

I didn't see your previous post, I guess because it was lost when my new thread was merged with this one.

I've never had dealings with a company like this one. When I asked about the Elimina (non-Pro) I was told they are waiting for the chassis and not sure when it will arrive. Why do they put these laptops on sale if they don't have the parts to manufacture them? As a compensation for the 238 euros I had to spend to upgrade to the Elimina Pro I was offered a game code or a 1-year dead pixel warranty. I don't play games and I wouldn't know a dead pixel if it bit me on the butt. Man, why did I ever leave A competitor?

You can easily cancel and go elsewhere if you're not happy.

That's easy for you to say. Yes, you are correct, I could start over. And I could spend more hours searching and waiting while my current laptop continues to regularly crash because of a hardware problem. My choices in France are limited by keyboard and language preference, and others didn't have stock for the sort of laptop I desire. There was one other PC customization firm I came upon. but their prices were unacceptable. I just think a firm like PCS should have a better approach with dealing with customers, a topic I know about as I have published several books on consumer behavior, brand loyalty and connecting with customers. But as you say, I could easily cancel and go elsewhere.

Ha ha ha.... I'm sorry but it's hilarious that all the people who are like "PCS customer service should be like this" or "why are the doing pre orders when they don't have the stock to deliver" all turn out to be consumate worldwide experts in really obscure fields who OBVIOUSLY have no idea how the tech world operates in any way shape or form.

I had sympathy for you up until you posted that :ROFLMAO: That's hilarious!
