Third RMA not booting up, error code 02

Hi All,

Got my desktop back after its 3rd RMA, every time, there was one fault or the other. In the latest one, the desktop is not even booting up.

Issue: Not booting at all. First startup single beep after 11 seconds, after another 7 seconds a long beep followed by 3 short beeps, error code 02. Screen blank all the time. Nothing is displayed.

Troubleshooting done ion advice from PC Specialist team:
1. Reseated all the Ram sticks. No change.
2. Tried booting with single ram sticks, slot 2 first and then slot 1, then all slots. No change on each attempt.
3. Removed the GPU - took the battery out of the mother board, left it out for 30 minutes (to remove excess charge ?!) , replaced it. Re attached the GPU - No change
4. Tried step 2 again . No change

I don’t know why the first starting beep is 11 seconds late? On my other desktop, it is in the first 2 seconds.

Is there anything else that I can try?
After 3 RMAs , this is heartbreaking.

What’s been the fault finding history so far with your RMAs according to PCS? Are there any particular issues they isolated during their repair process?

Might help the troubleshooters get a handle on things if they know the previous 👍

First RMA: It was BSODs, also a ‘tick’ sound and restarted without BSOD when under normal browsing. While troubleshooting PCS agent thought it could be faulty RAM (4 x 8gb 3600) and took it back. Reseating RAM was done. I had mentioned the potential incompatibility. RMA team replicated BSODs and said it was OS issues. (The agent on the phone thought it was RAM, but RMA said it was OS issues) . When it came back it had just got worse.

2nd RMA: Same symptoms but worse. During phone troubleshooting, the agent thought it was faulty RAM. PCS Took it back. This time PCS RMA confirmed that it was RAM incompatibility - I suggested change to 2x 32Gb 3000 MHz . PCS changed it. Did a core rebuild. When it got back, it was the same again. Occasional BSODs and going black with a ‘tick’ noise and restarting without BSODs.

3rd RMA: The phone troubleshooting was the usual reseating RAM, reinstalling OS, sfc etc. PCS took it back and RMA team confirmed that it was an issue with the Processor. Offered a core rebuild with replaced Processor, MB, RAM (changed to 4x 16 3200 MHz) and GPU. This was additionally tested by a senior technician (I was told)

That is what i got back now : This time it wouldn’t even boot up. During troubleshooting yesterday, In addition to RAM, we reseated the tiny battery on the motherboard and GPU but the behaviour is the same. Nothing appears on the screen. The startup beep is at 11 to 13 seconds, then 5 to 7 seconds later the long beep followers by 3 short beeps - error code 02. This was the same behaviour for each troubleshooting round.

To eliminate potential power supply issues (to the PSU), I moved the machine to another room to test but the behaviour is the same.

Stumped!

Did you try booting with just 2 sticks of RAM? Then Alternate with the other two?
Good point. Tried individual sticks, and all 4 of them, but not 2 sticks together.. i will try that in the next hour and come back...

I tried individual sticks (all 4 of them) in slots one and two separately. didn't think of trying two at the same time..

Finally got it working. And the resolution was really really really silly:🤭
Changed to a different kettle lead. It was my son who knows nothing about this who suggested “Maybe it’s not getting enough power”.. - and got it from him computer , switched it and viola. Up and running.
Thanks for the ideas

Glad you sorted it out :D

It is good that you have fixed the problem. I assume that you didn’t send the kettle lead back with the RMA, which means that PCS wouldn’t have been able to replicate the issues you were experiencing.

I had sent everything back previously - because it was intended for a refund. So, even the kettle lead was sent back. Last evening, after my issue was resolved, while Rooting through the accompanying accessories (three packets because of 3 RMAs) I found an extra kettle lead as well. Maybe the one they used worked, and the one I picked didn’t.

Anyways, all’s well that ends

Make sure you dispose of the dodgy lead and don't stick it in a drawer! I don't know how a kettle lead could "partially" fail, unless its one of those with no real earth???

If it didn’t, I would have gone back to being superstitious : “Maybe I am not destined to have a PC from PCS” etc..
You have no idea what a relief it is after 3 RMAs.
Thanks everyone
