Wifi/Download speed on a new system

My pc arrived today and everything is in order except my wifi is running incredibly slow, i’m downloading things at kb/s and not megabytes and websites generally are taking a long time to load. I am relatively sure this is an issue with the pc and not my router as all other devices are running perfectly fine in the same space. I have installed all pending windows updates and it hasn’t helped. Is it normal for there to be a period of time in which connections are slow when a pc is first set up or should I seek further methods for fixing this?

Hi Jason and congratulations on your purchase :) Have you checked that your Wifi is set at the correct standard ? Ie AC as opposed to N or G , also check that it is using the 5Ghz band for better performance .
Also check if the WiFi adapter is showing atleast 866 Mbit/s negotiated speed for AC network and don`t forget to check the bandwidh settings for the adapter . For 5 Ghz it should be 40 or 80 Mhz .

How can I check this, are these settings I have to configure through my pc or router. Sorry that I’m unaware this is my first build.

What is the name of your WiFi adapter and which OS are you using ?

…and have you plugged in the antennae for your wi-if card (assuming your PC uses external antennae)?
My pc has a wifi wireless card but i haven’t attached anything to it externally - I have no antennae, so sorry for being slow with it

Right, let’s get back to basics. Please can you post your spec from your orders page? At the moment, we have no clue what we’re dealing with so this information will be incredibly useful 👍

Brilliant, thanks 👍

You should have two plastic antennae in your PCS welcome pack box, they’ll need to be screwed into the ports at the back of the case, as below…

The other issue is that the WiFi card you have is of a very old standard and is not the best out there. I’m not sure it’s even officially supported any more! So even with the antennae attached you’re not going to be achieving super speeds. If wireless connectivity is important to you we’d usually suggest the AX200 as a cheap but infinitely superior model.

The antenna are attached but there’s been next to no improvement, is it possible for me to upgrade the wireless card independently and change it out? Or, if I got a lan cable that plugged directly into an extender would that be just as effective as the upgrade?

Another thought. Have you fully configured Windows yet? As in run the update tool repeatedly until no more are available, including the optional ones?

Both done, sadly downloads are still happening at 3.5mb/s when my provider says they should come in at least 55mb/s. Are changing the card or buying a cable legitimate options?

Before heading down that route, there’s still a few things to consider. I remember someone else having a nightmare with this particular card so have been looking for the thread. I have just located it and will link it below.

Have a read and see if any of the suggested solves work for you. If not, then I’d probably bite the bullet and get an AX200, it’s a quick and easy install.

Open the machine and make sure that the wifi card is fitted properly too - remove - give it a bit of a blow for dust etc and then replace.

Things move in transit :D

Will that not leave me vulnerable? Again sorry if i’m sounding like an idiot i’m very open to ideas and suggestions.

MS Windows has Defender now which is just as good if not better than Bullguard - BG has been known to cause issues etc.
