Ionico 12th gen and Thunderbolt

I have just bought a 12th gen Ionico laptop which said in the specs it has Thunderbolt 4. I am trying to use a Thunderbolt to FireWire adaptor with it but nothing shows up in the system settings when plugged in and nothing says Thunderbolt anywhere. Does this model actually have Thunderbolt 4 and if so how do you make it work?

Can you post your full specs from the order page?

And also a link to the FireWire adapter you have?

The FireWire adaptor is FireWire to Thunderbolt 2 from Apple, with a TB3-TB2 adaptor attached (also Apple). This set has worked on Previous Thunderbolt 3 laptops. However, I have also had Thunderbolt appear as an icon in the system tray on previous laptops and from there you can see when a new Thunderbolt device is attached.

Thunderbolt 2 isn't compatible with thunderbolt 4 as one uses usb c and the other used mini DP apple stuff is also not compatible with Windows machines.

There's a few reasons that won't work.

I have used this arrangement successfully on laptop which have Thunderbolt 3 - the TB2-3 adaptor converts the Firewire adaptor so it works. TB4 says it is as compatible at TB3 but I have not tried this before, so I don't know if it will work. However, this new lapytop has no mention of Thunderbolt in device manager or any software installed, so I don't know if it is not compatible or whether something is not installed. I am assuming the Thunderbolt 4 socket is the one on the back of the laptop but there is very little information supplied with the machine.

The ionico 17" does have thunderbolt 4 with Intel processors

But as said, an Apple thunderbolt adapter won't work in a PC as there are no drivers

The Apple Thunderbolt-firewire adaptor does work on Windows. I have a P775DM3 which I bought from PCS a few years back which has Thunderbolt 3 and that will capture from FireWire cameras using this device - I have tested the one I tried on the Iconio on this laptop. On the old laptop there is an option to enable Thunderbolt in the BIOS which I could not see in the Iconio and TB appears in device manager in the old laptop but not in the Iconio.
Anyway I apreciate your help, I realise that you are not an employee of PCS and are just offering the best advice you can. PCS are back at work I will try tech support. If I find out anything I'll post it here so it may help others. Trying to get FireWire to work on a laptop these days is quite niche :)

What drivers were you using on the old device?

Did you install windows yourself or order it with the machine as you didn't post the full specs?

The Iconio was as it came installed from PC Specialists. The older laptop has been reinstalled a few times and has Intel Thunderbolt drivers installed. I tried the latter on the Iconio but there was no change. The Apple FireWire-Thunderbolt adaptor does not need any drivers, if Thuunderbolt is active just works - at least on machines with TB2 & 3.
I used to have a company that sold specialist editing systems and we used to buy all our laptops were clevo models from PC Specialists so I have used this set up on several models. This is the first time I have used it on a TB4 model or Windows 11.

Did you order windows with the laptop though is what I'm asking?

It turns out that the Apple Thunderbolt to Firewire does not work on Windows after all! It works on my old Thunderbolt 3 laptop, but I have been trying to use it on a Thunderbolt 4 desktop system and it will not been seen at all. I am about to get another of the iconio laptops for someone and I will test with a different Thunderbolt device I know works with TB4 and see what happens.

Whether you buy a windows licence or not, it will always come with a preinstalled copy of windows.
Difference is, when you buy a licence, its a proper version of windows and just needs win update etc....when you dont, its a test version that isnt suitable for use as a OS, its only there so they can test the machine works and you need to install a full version of windows and any drivers etc before you'll get proper functionality.

This is likely why you were being asked if you bought a copy, and your answer doesnt actually answer that question, youve just said it was preinstalled.

I did not apprectiate the difference but yes, I ordered a copy of windows with the laptop. I assumed if you did not pay for Windows it would have Windows on it. As mentioned in my post I think I know why it did not work now, however, and it was as Spyder tracks suggested because the Apple FireWire thing does not work on Windows.
