Is This Normal On Start Up or Exiting Sleep

Hi all,

Just got my new PC yesterday (spec below) and very happy with it. One thing I have noticed though on start up or exiting sleep mode the fans will all come on then there will be a click and they stop then it all comes on again and everything is normal.

Its also beeped 4 times during the process sometimes. It does it on exiting seep mode too though all the programs etc are still open when I get back in so does not look like it crashed or anything.

Does this sound normal?

Thanks!

The beeps are error codes mate, if you tell us exactly how many there where and in what sequence we can help deduce the problem

4 beeps I'm assuming one long beep and 3 short beeps?

Pretty common for fans to ramp up on start up and then settle down to the correct RPM based on either BIOS or software config. So I wouldn't be concerned by this as long as they are operating at the correct RPM under load.

My guess is the beeps are due to the monitor not being on or asleep when PC boots, and it's giving a VGA error which resolves once the display is up and running.

Above was my guess also.

You can test it out by turning off your monitor when resuming from sleep. It will likely beep.

Next time, switch your monitor on immediately before resuming from sleep. Hopefully it won't beep and this will confirm.

So I did the above and its no longer happening on start up. It is when it comes out of sleep mode though. It also shows the PC Specialist splash screen after it happens but again all the programs I had running etc are still open.

I normally stick it in sleep mode when I go for lunch or whatever its not a big deal not to use it its more just so that I am not worrying in the back of my mind that there is a bigger issue behind it. PC has worked great so far though. I raised a tech support ticket this evening as well just to cover every base.

Thanks!

I think it's timing out of sleep and going into hibernation, that would explain why it's showing the PCS logo again and loading all programs when you're in windows.

Hibernation is enabled by default.

I would recommend disabling it, you can do this through an elevated cmd prompt:

  1. Then type "powercfg.exe /hibernate off" into the Command Prompt without quotes
  2. Finally, hit Enter on your keyboard.

The other question is is it still the four long beeps or is it now the 3 beeps and one short which would be the normal false error if the display isn't powered on when the PC is booting?

I tried the powercfg.exe /hibernate off, it didn't fix it but this time when it came back in it was like the PC had booted from cold, everything was closed and chrome gave an error say its not closed down correctly. Also did the scan but it didn't show up anything.

That's so weird, yeah, you're right it's still the 4.

Have you disabled hibernate?

How familiar are you with the BIOS?

These Gigabyte boards do seem much more buggy than the Asus ones.
Somewhat familiar with BIOS, I can get into it and can have a look around if I knew what I was looking for lol.

Cool, I do think I know what the issue is, although it's giving the 4 beeps, I believe this is a false bug on the Gigabyte boards related to CSM states of sleep and hibernate specifically with RTX3000 series cards. CSM stands for Compatiblity Support Module, it's related to launching legacy OS's or older peripheral devices.

As a quick test, can you go into the BIOS, then to the "Boot" tab, then scroll down to "CSM Support", make sure it's disabled.

The reboot, see if the beeps are still there.

Damn.

Well, I would definitely raise with PCS, it may well be just a bug in that BIOS version, but to update the BIOS you need their approval to maintain warranty, so definitely contact them.

Can you feed back what they say? I'd be really interested.

In my pure guess, it's not actually an issue as such, I don't think there's anything wrong with the system, I think it's a bug on the board.

But best to raise it so they're aware if nothing else just in case something happens down the line, and also they may be able to correct it.

Yeah I will post the outcome here. Thanks very much for all your help and everyone else too! As you say I think its just a bug or something but if nothing else better to raise it so they are aware.

Haha yeah not going near any BIOS updates without checking with them first.

Thanks again.

First thing they have asked me to do is reset the RAM and drives, pretty much remove them leave for a bit and put back in. So I guess I will try that tomorrow.
