yeah just ask for no OS to be installed, and then when it comes pop your cd in and format and install , then you can keep your version linked with your key :)

I guess you mean the Win 7 upgrade version for people with a .ac.uk email. Or, if you're lucky enough to have your university department linked with the micrsoft software distribution programme I guess you get it for free :p

The Upgrade version cannot offer you a complete wipe and reinstall. It still requires Windows Vista as a base.

Also works for XP

You must have the relevant architecture though, Windows XP x86 can't be upgraded with say, Windows 7 ultimate x64, but it can with say, Windows 7 Ultimate x86 and vica versa.

No, Slenious. You cannot do a direct upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7. To upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7 you *must* backup your data, wipe the HDD's and perform a clean install, in turn thus meaning you require a full edition (not an upgrade edition) of Windows 7. ;)

Nope ;) I agree you have to do a full install, but the upgrade disc will allow you to chooose between upgrade install, and custom full install. The only reason it's called 'upgrade' is because you MUST have a legitimate windows XP/Vista/7 key from the previous installation already on your HDD before the disc will allow you to do a clean install :) I've done it twice so far ;)

Hmm, I shall take your word for it, lol. As for the OP, you could always choose the assisted installation / setup option on your PC's config page if you don't feel comfortable doing it by yourself, yet that naturally has additional fees. (Assuming it covers installation of your own Windows based OS)
