PCSPECIALIST, PCSPECIALIST Headset/microphone single socket: how many poles?

I am considering a 15.6" Initia AKA Clevo NL51RU. It has a single "Headphone-out/ MIC-in phone jack", but there is no specification of how many poles are needed. Presumably this is one of the TRRS standards. All my headsets have separate microphone and headphone connectors, so I will need to buy...

Sad to hear that. I would be surprised if your "music kit" could not be made to work with linux, but it might have taken a bit of work. Linux has superb sound support, but utterly ridiculously poor documentation. The underlying ALSA system is actually excellent, but has totally confused...

You would have to provide far more detail before anyone could even begin to advise on which model to select. Most of these laptops are Clevo designs. As a rule linux will run on most, if not all, but you may have to make a few small configuration tweaks. If you have some experience with linux...

PCSPECIALIST, PCSPECIALIST Does Initia 14" notebook come with a backlit keyboard

I have just noticed this thread. Form what others have said, it does sound as if you simply don't have a backlight. But a simple search in the /sys/class/ directory will often help in this sort of situation. Something like $ find /sys/class/ -name "*light*" may reveal something relevant...

PCSPECIALIST, PCSPECIALIST NOVA 15" - Unable to change the screen brightness (Possible fix)

Good to hear. Meanwhile, I forgot to ask: has anyone looked in /sys/class/backlight/? I would expect the kernel to know about the backlight and expose it somewhere like that. I hope that doesn't go via the bios, but I suppose that it could do.

PCSPECIALIST, PCSPECIALIST NOVA 15" - Unable to change the screen brightness (Possible fix)

Does anyone know if PCS are shipping new machines with the latest bios, or is it still left to the customer to reflash?

Thanks for those replies. I have only just seen them :-( {Watch was set without email notification.. } Very glad to hear that CUDA works Ok. I hope with the nouveau driver. I like to be able to compile my own custom kernels, and it used to be the case that the native nvidia drivers were always...

PCSPECIALIST, PCSPECIALIST NOVA - Rzyen9 3900's Review with Linux Installed

As others had said, thanks for the review. Two quick questions: were you using the closed source nvidia driver, or nouveau for the RTX2060? And have you tried to get cuda working? Under linux, of course.

I am intending to buy a high end NOVA laptop for linux, but there seems to be little available information. I noticed which suggests that PCspecialist sends out systems polluted with Windoze, and that I...

I run Debian testing and regularly use external usb drives via an USB 3 port. What mount command did you use? The fact that you had a message about the UUID sounds as if something (not hideous systemd, I hope) was guessing which drive to use and getting it wrong. To debug , I would start as...

PCSPECIALIST, PCSPECIALIST Nova 15.6 Battery life

I notice that you had "no operating system". The nvidia GPUs are especially power hungry and the device drivers need to do a lot of work to keep the power consumption down. Are you by any chance using Linux? If so, are you using the closed source nvidia drivers, or nouveau? If nouveau, there...

I have just seen the Nova! I should have checked first. This might be the same thing.

I see that Clevo now have Ryzen laptops at long last on the website . Unfortunately most if not all of the seem to have nvidia graphics, but perhaps that will change as further models are designed. When will PCSpecialist be offering Ryzen laptops, presumably from this range? Of...

Well, I have designed hardware in the past, and sharing bandwidth on a single connector is less than optimal. However, I had a quick look at the thunderbolt 3 specification, and it does seem to support multiple high bandwidth channels, so I guess this won't be an issue here. As for the -u...

Hmm. I have been looking at usb to ethernet adapters since posting. I don't really like losing some of the bandwidth by cramming more streams through a single port. I would much prefer a stick and sturdy portable with decent thermal management rather than the current fashion for silly extremes...

PCSPECIALIST, PCSPECIALIST Issue with SSD ADATA SX6000 on My Lafite III 15.6 with Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS

I know very little about pcie, but those sound like hardware problems. I would reseat the SSD for a start and see if that changes anything. Always suspect connector problems first with hardware.

PCSPECIALIST, PCSPECIALIST Ubuntu freezing on Lafite

I don't know if this is the same problem, but my mouse occasionally freezes on two machines. I just rmmod psmouse modprobe psmouse That always fixes the problem. I suspect a rare race condition or other timing problem in the driver. Changing that setting might well avoid such a bug...

I can't see an RJ25 port on the new Lafife' laptops. Have I missed it? Surely nobody would build a serious machine without?

PCSPECIALIST, PCSPECIALIST Just ordered a 17.3" Cosmos VII , any tips?

Ooops. Just realized that the thread was Comos V11. I was talking about the Cosmos V111 :-)

PCSPECIALIST, PCSPECIALIST Just ordered a 17.3" Cosmos VII , any tips?

Any update? This looks promising in the absence of a decent AMD Ryzen laptop. There is an ethernet port on the rear isn't there? It is not mentioned in the specifications, but the photograph suggests it is there. But then how does the battery detach? I normally run without a battery (kept...
