Any tips on how to dismantle and clean a 17.3" Defiance IX laptop? I'm not sure how to take the bottom off it. I had no problems with the Vortex IV so I know the basics, it's a question of which screws to remove and what direction to push or pull the cover!
I ordered a Defiance IX on the 12th of January, and it was delivered on the 21st. Not bad!
Here are the important specs, and the thread where I posted them:
I changed the OS for Windows 10 and the first SSD for a Samsung 970 Evo Plus after placing the order which was really simple using the...
I've connected the HDD from my old dying laptop into my new one using a cheap USB to SATA adapter. Everything seemed ok at first except one of the directories gives me this every time I click on it:
I click Continue, but it just does nothing. It's a very big folder with a lot of files and...
I was hoping to wait until later in the year to see what new comes out, but issues with my ageing Vortex IV meant I need to get a move on!

Looks like I need to replace my Vortex IV Elite sooner rather than later...
It's been crashing every time I try to run a game for a week now. Today this started happening.
Quite a few of the laptops have a bigger choice for the first M.2 drive than for the second. Why is this, do they have different slots?
For example, the Defiance IX 17.3" can have a PCS drive in the first slot but not the second. It can't have a Samsung 980 PRO in either.
The Recoil V 17.2"...
Any opinions on these? Tom's Hardware review says "The company’s FusionX software also allows you to expand your storage volume up to 32TB by adding another SSD or HDD (just one)", does that mean what it says - that I can have a 900GB Fuze and add, say, a 2TB Corsair and the software will...
Does anyone have experience in replacing a Windows boot drive with a SSD?
I used the Crucial System Scanner to recommend upgrades, and it took me to a how-to page on cloning a drive to SSD:
https://uk.crucial.com/support/ssd/ssd-install.html
This involves using a USB-to-SATA connector and the...
The “Recoil” seems in all ways superior to the “Recoil IV” but it’s £500 cheaper. 11th gen vs 10th, RTX 30x0 vs 20x0, better M.2, Thunderbolt 4 vs 3. What am I missing?
I guess it’s just that the IV has higher spec parts by default.
Just been reading about screens and subpixels, and it seems there's an issue with BGR subpixels. At the moment, Google Chrome and Adobe Acrobat hard code their font smoothing to expect RGB subpixels, and so any screen with BGR will look bad.
Does anyone know the details of PCSpecialist laptop...
Interesting to see up to 8GB in a single SSD nowadays. I've only seen that as the primary option on a 17.3" Elimina. What is it that determines which chassis can take these? Is it just physical size?
Seems super slow though. "Up to 560MB/sR" versus "Up to 3500MB/sR" for an Intel SSD on another...
Of the 17" gaming laptops, only the monster Recall mentions "N-Key Roll Over". Do any of the other machines offer better than standard key roll over?
For the benefit of anyone who doesn't know, "roll over" means when you press multiple keys simultaneously and some of them do not register, or...
Does anyone have a list of the chassis manufacturers for the current crop of PCSpecialist 17" gaming laptops? Ionico and Recoil are both Tongfang I see mentioned, as is the Valeon.
Here's what I have found. Any with ? mean I can't proceed to the "Post to forum" stage that reveals the secret...
Any repair experts out there?
My laptop has started making an occasional snap-crackle-pop noise, and the battery charging cuts in and out.
Any suggestions? (Apart from the obvious "It's 7.5 years old what did you expect buy a new one")
I keep getting warned about this. When I go to do something about it, it prompts me for an "owner password". I have no idea what this is. Any suggestions? Was I given an owner password when I bought my laptop? I don't remember anything about it.
What's the main difference between the three Vortex IV models? When comparing the three, it looks like the Vortex IV SE is the best, as it has Firewire, and Mini Display, and NVidia Optimus. It's the cheapest of the three, but that's down to the optional extras in the default package like hard...
