Have you tried the latest version of blender (Blender 2.5/2.5) The UI has had a major overhaul and loads of new features have been added. :D

I have, but its still nothing compared to max. While I think the features in blender are great, particle, cloth and flow are particularly good for an opensource program, the UI is still crap even on the newest one lol.

Crap? or just different?
I found it fairly intuitive

Crap :) lol, honestly if you use something like Max, Maya, Lightwave, even applications such as UDK which isnt a modelling application but game development they have a way of arranging interfaces, designing them to aid workflow. Blender just doesn't.

Also blender go against convetion with their naming quite alot which becomes quite annoying as someone who has used many of the professional programs int he past to now have to switch to something that for example doesnt call a Vertex a Vertex.

If your used to things being a particular way then its always a pain, but naming conventions aside the actual Blender interface is fairly customizable

Yeah I agree its customizable, but even when you have it laid out as I do (the same as Max) its still not as user friendly as one of the professional programs, but then I guess you get what you pay for really.

Also when it comes to the renderers etc, your stuck with pretty basic renderers in blender whcih limits the output.

Might give Max a try and see what your on about ;)

Deffinately worth the try :)

Also if you go through the education site you can get it for free if you tick the box saying "yes I am a student" lol, Its fully functional but apparently prints a watermark across certain resolution photos.

I use a full licenced version seeing as its what ive been using for years.

The watermark must be fairly impossible to see if it exists at all. I've certainly never came across it in the animations or renders I've made since I started using 3Ds Max a couple of months ago.

I have a feeling its only at certain resolutions, but yeah as you say hard to see if it is there lol. I have seen friends use it and never seen a watermark. I still prefer to have th fully licenced product though.

Well I generally do them at about 5,000 x 3,000 roughly and have never seen it as of yet. Will keep using it until I notice it I suppose :turned:

Lol yeah, I cant wait to do a full render on my new system :D got a car I been working on for about 6 months now, just about ready to do full renders on, been working on the materials for the past month. Would have taken about 7 hours on my old pc, so hoping my dual GTX 580 3GB cards will help a little lol.

what is the link to the "student" version of max? I used to use it years ago, but it was a copy a friend installed for me.

You get round to doing that car Frenchy? Interested in the image and render time :D

You know, I completely forgot haha, I have been using Autodesk inventor though, runs smooth as anything, I also rendered the spider which I posted above, same resolution etc, on my old system I think it took aroun5 minutes to render that single frame, on my new one took just over a minute. On non refractive and reflective renders and using scanline rendering instead of mental ray, render times are insane. Obviousyl as soon as you use mental ray though everything slows down. I will try get round to doing a few more test renders tonight.

Out of everything im most impressed with two things, the new nitro viewport in 3ds max, looks so good and runs perfectly smooth (this is in 2012 version), also in UDK the real time rendering in the viewport is stunning, so smooth and so quick.

Some updates of work done on my PC Specialist machine.

I've used both Max and Blender in professional environments and must say that once you get used to Blender the interface makes total sense. People are always going to have their faves though. I use only Blender for 3d work now which being a freelancer is ideal.

Here are some recent projects if anyone fancies a look. I'll upload a few more.
