Advantage and Disadvantage of overclocking

I am not an expert at this but through some research I have found out that overclocked cpu will perform better at times of needs however consume more power generate more heat and on top of all it wont last long compared to a non overclocked cpu.

So is it worth overclocking?

Decreased lifespan and stability vs performance gain.

Its down to the individual, personally i rarely overclock unless for bragging rights or im bored and fancy risking a really expensive bit of hardware.

so going without a overclocked cpu also means no need for good cpu coolers like watercooling

good cooling will still be beneficial on a non-OCd system, if the temperatures are much cooler, the CPU will last longer

I've OC'ed every CPU i've had, i even still have a pentium 4 with a 75% OC that still works.

Instability in an overclocked system is most likely down to the owner not knowing what they are doing, yes chip degradation is real but its extremely hard to fry any recent CPU as they throttle back themselves when the temperature gets too high, you are more likely to fry the CPU socket with silly volts or blow a capacitor on a cheap motherboard than break a CPU.

certainly not something a novice should undertake. Something I wouldn't do as it wouldn't benefit my needs.

but pcspecialists do offer overclocking certainly no risk there

they certainly do mate, however, depending on ya needs and what ya plan to do with the pc may have gain little or no advantage from a OC, for example for gaming you will see very little benefit unless you play very cpu intensive games such as flight simulators, I believe shogun 2 total war may take advantage of a OC, however, my 2600/580 combo handles the game with well, with the setting on max. So depending on what games you play depends if an OC will help at all.

If you do alot of heavy cpu work then its beneficial, although I honestly believe a strong cpu will handle the majority of needs with ease anyway.

The benifit of O/C's are only noticeable when 'benchmarking'.in normal day to day usage u wouldn't notice any diff in performance/speed....assuming u have a half decent setup already,I base this on personal experience btw the biggest improvement in performance/speed I have noticed will be achieved imo with a SSD not an O/C
