Windows Installer Not Responding

I have just bought a pc from Pc specialist and it's been working really well, until I tried to install steam. When I tried to install it, a message would come up saying that Windows installer was not responding.
Does anyone have any ideas on what's wrong and how to fix it.
Thanks For Your Time.

There could be an issue with the actual Windows Installer software so I would suggest the following just to reset it:
1. Click on the start orb (or equivalent) and in the search box type 'Administrative Tools'
2. Click on the icon that comes up under 'Administrative Tools'
3. Click on 'Services'
4. Go all the way down the list that comes on and double click on 'Windows Installer'
5. Under the 'General' tab the 'Start Up' tab should be set to 'Manual'. Change this to 'Disabled', click 'Apply' and reboot your system.
6. Once system is rebooted do exactly as the above 1-4 but this time under the 'General' tab and the 'Start Up' tab change it back to 'Manual', click apply and then reboot your system again.

Once the above has been done try to reinstall Steam and see if it has cleared up the problem.

I had a similar problem once with just one piece of software that wouldn't install and resetting the Windows Installer as above resolved it so may be worth a go.

If the above doesn't work then this webpage gives a range of other solutions http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2438651#reso1

Thanks for your help, but it still isn't working,
The problem occurs when I go to run it. It says that it's installing updates and then it simply stops.
Don't know if that means anything different.

If the problem isn't actually in installing the software but in actually running it (once it has been downloaded and installed) then a quick option would be to completely uninstall Steam and reinstall it just in case it was a corrupt installation of some kind or some key files are not working properly.

Just tried it and that didn't work either.
What should I do if I can't fix it?

Might be an idea either calling PCS for support or going onto the Steam Forums and posting your issue to see if anyone else has experienced it and been able to resolve it.

If I can think of anything else to try I'll post again.

I would certainly turn to the Steam forums or Valve for support. I don't think you could expect PCS to provide support for Steam, or any other software you might run.
