Help checking these specs (3D pc)

Hi all,

I'm getting a new pc because my old laptop it's not handling my work, so I though I would go with a desktop since you get more for the same price.

The pc it's to do some personal work, I use mainly Autodesk Maya(modeling and rendering), ZBrush, Photoshop, and After Effects(compositing videos).

My budget its around 900£ give or take.(maybe until 1,000£, but still need to buy monitor)
For now I will get one monitor, but in a near future I'll be getting, at least, a second one.
This won't be my ''earn salary'' computer, so it doesn't needs to be topnotch, but I also don't want something that will be bad in 1 or 2 years time.

I plan to do some gamming as well, even if I'm not to fussed about having all the games specs in High, I would like it to handle games for some years, even if in medium/low quality. (Some games I will be playing: assasins creed, Counter Strike, Pro evolution soccer)

Said that, I have been doing some research to try get the right components to use the progams mentioned above, but I'm still very confused. (in the end I give more importance to the work than to the gaming)

What I know (or what I think I know):
-Autodesk recomends NVIDIA Quadro or AMD firepro.
-its good idea to have an SSD Hard Disk, but I reckon the one I choose below will do for now. I will buy an SSD in the future though.
-the power suply, I chose one a bit higher in case I do overclocking in the future.
-due to rendering I chose a better cooling system.

Things I'm really not sure about:
-Motherboard, I really dont have any idea if this one its the right one or not.
-Ram, is it better have a 8x1 or 4x2? Should I go for 16Gb?
-Processor: should I go for an i7 4 cores 8 threads, or this AMD with 6 cores. I think for rendering the more the cores the better.

Well, this is what I came up with:

On the GPu front I would probably go with an Nvidia GTX 770, that combines the best of both worlds if you want gaming and a bit of Autodesk. I'm not too sure how the 280x will cope in Autodesk, but boozad choose it because you want some gaming performance too, the best compromise would be with the consumer grade cards rather than the pro grade cards, especially since it isn't your, as you put it "earn salary" rig.

To answer your specific questions.

Motherboard, The z87-a in the build above gives you the room for all the upgrades you will ever need. Basically if you don't plan upgrades, almost any motherboard will do as they don't really hinder performance.

RAM, in theory 2x4 is better than 1x8 but in the real world it doesn't seem to matter, I always go for 2x4 if you have at least 2 spare RAM slots to upgrade later should you need to. If the motherboard only had 2 RAM slots then I would go for 1x8

You are correct, with rendering the more cores the better but that's only really applicable when comparing apples with apples, you cant do it with AMD vs intel. Basically intel wins hands down with the 4770 over just about every other AMD chip. it is mor e efficient clock for clock then the AMD chips and has a better architecture so it just dominates even some of the 8 core AMD chips with only 4 physical cores.

hey guys, thanks for your answers :)

so taking on what you both said I came up with this spec.
the price increased, but hey, better spend a bit more now than regret in the future.

@mantadog: when you say nvidia gtx 770, were you refering to the one of 2Gb or 4Gb? the price difference its +- 38£.
I know is a noob question, but do you think is worth getting the 4Gb one?

I also changed the case for a cheaper one that seems to have loads of ventilation.
Another thing I had to change was the power suply, this is because of the nvidia gtx 770. Both the 2Gb and 4Gb asked for a better power suply.

For a pure gaming build the 4GB card is not needed, but because you plan to use Autodesk I think you should get the 4GB card as that can increase performance quite a bit in modelling applications.

The power supply is a must, due to issues with the lower spec ones providing the required amps as the cards start drawing load. The chassis will work so if that's all you can afford and don't mind the look of it then I think its an alright choice.
