Hard Drive & Fan noises on Cosmos II

Hi everyone,

I recently sent my new Cosmos II that I bought 3 weeks ago for repair, as the Hard Drive constantly made a crackling noise that was pretty annoying, and the fan OCCASIONALLY made a similar, higher pitched crackling noise. The replaced both the hard drive and the fan, but now that I have it back, not only is the hard drive making the same noise, but the fan noise is worse and more frequent!

Also the mouse has suddenly gotten quite laggy and jumpy out of absolutely nowhere, which did happen before I sent it for repair, but went away on its own.

Can anyone give me some advice, as I'm really disappointed with all the problems I'm having with it after paying so much money? Do you reckon I have grounds to return the laptop for a refund?

I'd suggest checking to see if the HDD and fans are fitted correctly in the chasis (sounds like something may have come loose in transit), but I don't own a Cosmos II laptop so couldn't say how easy (or difficult) that might be to do.

If you can, I'd recommend calling PCS to discuss the issues with them before trying to request a refund, it might be something simple to fix. They can talk you through the steps required to open up the laptop and check everything is fitted correctly.

Out of interest, what did your RMA notes say?

They said that the hard drive and fan were found to be faulty and were replaced and that windows was reinstalled, but like, if I'm having the same problems now, and I was told yesterday that it cant be the parts that are faulty since theyve been replaced, then it would seem that either they just replaced the components to keep me happy or the new parts are also faulty.

The mouse lag is getting really annoying and I cant find a way to fix it!

I'm not sure what the deal is with the mouse lag, but it is entirely possible the components are faulty (again). As I suggested, you could take a gander and see if everything is fitted correctly.

Its unlikely that the mouse lag is caused by the harddrive or fan though. Are you just using the track pad? Or a wired/wireless mouse? If its the wired/wireless mouse, does the lag still occur if you use the trackpad?

Could the mouse lag be due to some kind of process putting too heavy a load on the comupter causing the mouse pointer to lag?

I would have a look at the Task Manager -> System Processes to find out if something is causing some heavy load on your machine.

Might not be but just to rule that out.

Some hard drives are noisier than others, the fan noise might also be a "feature" of that model? If PCS say they have replaced the HDD and fan then you can be sure that they have. It is of course possible that the new components are also faulty as steaky360 says, but I think that's unlikely. It's much more likely (since PCS has had it back) that the noises are normal and you have become over sensitive to them?

Do you have the correct driver installed for the mouse? If it's an external mouse visit the manufacturer's website for the right driver. If you're talking about the touchpad PCS should have supplied the right driver on a disk.

Regarding your right to a refund make sure you read the terms and conditions at http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/terms/.
