I'm french and was forced to order abroad to get a QWERTY (USA) keyboard :sweatdrop: I found PCSpecialist after a lot of web surfing, reading reviews and stuff. And very happy by the configuration options available !

Why this configuration ? I develop application and need a laptop able to run 6 VMs at once with good mobility... no need for an Nvidia card on this one (love to code in CUDA though), but the qwerty keyboard is mandatory, you get it. You understand now the quad-core (and the future upgrade to 16Go of RAM). You will ask "why the heck did you take 3 hard-drives ?" though... Well, my main OS (ArchLinux) is on the 120Go M.2 SSD Drive and all the multimedia stuff, VMs included on the 750GB WD SCORPIO BLACK (7200 rpm). The last 120GB KINGSTON HYPERX 3K SSD will go on with his life in another laptop : No need for an optical drive nowadays !

I selected the FAST TRACK 3 WORKING DAY DISPATCH build time, add to this the 2 days delivery to France (Chronopost) and... here we go, the laptop was in my hands in a small week after order. The package was well made, the small dessicant bag was opened though, but, except for the noise, no harm done.

Time to check the laptop. Everything is as I ordered. 2 bad points however :
  1. :excl: The two top screws of the screen were... well, too much screwed, making the backlight leaked on a black background. Easy to repair though, I just unscrewed them a little.
  2. :excl: Bad luck, I have a green pixel in the top-{center-left} of the screen. As I use mainly dark background for work, I can see it...

I will give you my last bad surprise now : I choose the ARCTIC MX-4 EXTREME THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY COMPOUND as thermal paste, and I'm not sure if it was used (or correctly used). :detective: I suspect an air bubble under here as my thermal monitor reports some value I find high :)excl: between 50 and 65°C with just a terminal opened and I'm not on a tropical island, but under the snow).

That's said, all the hardware works wonderfully under ArchLinux. No issue to map the special keys, to use the Wifi or the Bluetooth, the camera (which serves me to move my mouse with my head and focus on windows, thanks eviacam), and so on... I use a tiling window manager (awesome), so I don't really need the trackpad, but it works perfectly. Last but not least, I ordered 2 batteries (~5h for each 6-cell battery top, one of them seems already used though : :excl: capacity of 5099mAh instead of 5600mAh).

So, all things considered, it's a wonderful laptop, very easy to upgrade if needed and *nix friendly.

Hope this review will make you want to buy this nice and classic laptop model

Here some pictures of this nice laptop. Flowers not included in the package :winkiss:

UPDATE

Quick pros/cons :

+ *nix friendly
+ Ease of upgrade
+ Configuration options
+ Fast boot time (~10sec)
+ Very lightweight charger
+ Build and delivery time
+ Stickers free :)

- 1 green pixel on the FullHD screen
- Battery with a max capacity of 5099mAh instead of 5600mAh
- Some back-light leaks
- High CPU thermal value

I will give you my last bad surprise now : I choose the ARCTIC MX-4 EXTREME THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY COMPOUND as thermal paste, and I'm not sure if it was used (or correctly used). :detective: I suspect an air bubble under here as my thermal monitor reports some value I find high :)excl: between 50 and 65°C with just a terminal opened and I'm not on a tropical island, but under the snow).
I didn't take the time to check thoroughly yet. It can be a shift of +15°C or +20°C of the temperature sensors...
By the way, you can use the fn+1 key to have the fan fully blows (The 1 key has no little blue fan, but it works great !).
