Windows 7 Update Freezing

I bought my PC from PCSpecialist back in August 2014. I have NEVER been able to install windows 7 updates to this PC. The issue I have is that it will download the updates, but when the systems restarts ready to update, the update gets to 32% and freezes. I then get stuck in a loop and struggle (sometimes for hours) to get back into windows. This has resulted in me having to disable Windows updates, which potentially leaves my PC vulnerable. My antivirus (Bullguard) is turned off when trying to install the updates which seems to make no difference. It doesn't seem to matter if I download the updates manually or through the auto update tool. Please, please help - and bear in mind I'm not 100% computer savvy! My system is as follows

Have you tried installing the updates one at a time? I can't find the thread, but I'm sure a similar problem to this was solved by installing the updates one at a time and restarting as required. Doing it that way will help you determine if its one update that is causing the problem or whether its just the sheer volume of updates that is causing it to crash.

Good advice, especially if (as I suspect) you're trying to install a ton of updates at once. However, as you've been having lots of update problems it would probably be wise to do a clean reinstall of Windows to be certain that the problem isn't there.

Once you have reinstalled Windows install all the PCS-supplied drivers and then run Windows update. Select only the Important updates (ignore Recommended and Driver updates for now). If you have many updates (more than about a dozen -which you will) install them a few at a time.

So uncheck all Important updates and then select things like IE security updates, Flash updates, and other non-system updates. Just install those, then reboot (even if you're not asked to).

Then select the select only the updates for the .NET Framework - if you have more than one version of .NET installed update each version separately (it is these updates that most often cause problems). Reboot after each update session even if you're not asked to.

Then select the Security Updates, there will be a lot of these so do them in bunches of 10. If you have problems do them in bunches of 5, and if you still have problems do them one at a time. Reboot after each update session even if you're not asked to. Keep repeating this until all updates are installed.

Then run Windows Update again to see if there are more updates, if there are use the above technique to install them.

I really do suggest you start with a clean reinstall of Windows, not only because the failed updates may have left Windows in an unstable condition but also because there might be a problem with your current Windows installation. I realise this will be onerous and long but it really is well worth doing.

This may seem like the most ridiculous question...
If I perform a clean install of windows, will I lose other software (games etc) that I have already installed? I have amassed a large amount of flight simulator add ons that would take best part of a whole day to reinstall.

As keynes says, you will lose everything, the drive will be reformatted as part of the install of Windows. I realise that a reinstall is a daunting prospect, it will probably take you several days to get back to where you want to be, but it's almost always the least painful action in the long run. You've already spent a huge amount of time from what you say trying to install updates, and on top of that you're exposed to all the problems that the uninstalled updates fix.

If you really want to try every avenue before going sown the reinstall route you can try installing the updates in bits in the manner I suggested. If that works then all well and good. But it may not, and if it doesn't a reinstall really is your best option.

Have you tried downloading and running the windows update fix it tools?

Try Basic first
Basic fix Direct download : MS FIX IT Basic Download

If it still doesnt work try the Fix It Tool 50202. That should completely reinstall Windows Update components. when you run it leave the RUN AGGRESSIVE box UNchecked
FIX IT DOWNLOAD -> MicrosoftFixit50202 Download

If it still doesnt work repeat tool 50202 and run in aggressive mode.

You could also try if all else fails the system update readiness tool see if that helps. you can find that HERE

Windows 7 reinstal -please help!!

HI,

After having issues with windows updates and not being able to have any for the last 6 months, I was advised on here to reinstall windows. I formatted the drive and reinstalled windows 7 from the boot disc. I have put the motherboard disc in and installed the drivers from this. The only issue I have is that I can't get online. The computer doesn't seem to recognise my wireless card! I'm assuming it's a driver issue, but don't know the manufacturer of the card, or where to download the drivers from. The only drivers I have available on here are for the on board not wireless card. Please help. I believe the wireless card is just the standard one you can add. This is the card.
