Not sure if faulty or not...

Hi there,

I've recently bought a 17.3" Octane laptop from you guys and i have a few issues which I'm trying to resolve..

First - The pc does not reboot...I've only just discovered this issue after solving another problem before which was a finger-print scanner driver issue.
Anyway, the pc shuts down fine, but when I select reboot, windows says restarting, the screen goes black the lights on the keyboard stay lit but it doesn't reboot. I've waited over 20 minutes for it it reboot before but I got annoyed and just turned it off at power switch and turned it on that way. Do you think a reformat may be needed?

Second - Overclocking. I know laptops aren't meant for overclocking but i found it ridiculous when i found out that similar laptops with the same 970m gfx have default clock at 924MHz. Mine is stock clocked at 540MHz...
I know nvidia's latest drivers don't allow for overclocking so I rolled back my drivers to 344.75 and i still cant overclock. Does it have a locked bios??

(EDIT) Third - the POST screen has no button prompts to enter the bios, I've tried all the main and common ones but to no success. Am I locked out the bios or something? It just shows the PC Specialist screen and then boots to windows.

Hope this gets resolved soon.

Thanks,

Sean

FYI, I work for a computer firm building pc's too, so don't treat me like a stupid customer :stuart:

I recently got a Vortex IV SE and couldn't get into the bios or trigger the boot device menu to install Windows.

I had to call PC Specialist in the end and they told me that Windows 8 was so quick at booting it could make it impossible to trigger the bios so you need to open the run dialog (Windows key + r) our the command prompt and type "shutdown /p" (without the quotes).

That will make Windows pause the next time it starts up giving you time to hit the right key for the bios - probably F2.

first - got exactly that same problem in a completely different laptop, it was a software issue with windows, if you dont want to reinstall you just have to turn off then turn on instead of rebooting

second - all laptops come nowadays with a BIOS lock, all of them. if you REALLY want to OC you can try checking the web of prema mod, he makes modded bios for clevo laptops. i first would check temps in your monster, because that could be the reason why it's so capped in clocks

Worth noting that flashing a custom bios will void your warranty.

I was told the 970m was being read wrong when I said mine was at 540? why have these cards been set to this?

Ok that worked thanks, I didn't realise how locked down laptop bios is...can't really do much.

Thanks, at least I know its software and not hardware issue with windows, I would use the recovery CD provided but this laptop doesn't have a disc drive...*Facepalm*.

I think i will look more into prema mod, it seems like the way to go for overclocking. My temps are fine, I cant get the GPU past 60 degrees, I was running the haven benchmark for 30 minutes. I think there is plenty to leeway for temps :)

yeah, well, i still wouldnt flash the bios while under the warranty, not worth the risk in my opinion
have you tried using MSI afterburner or other software to OC? they are capped but it's still an OC without voiding the warranty

Yeah I have. I've tried MSI afterburner, EVGA Precision and Nvidia Inspector. All of which don't apply the settings...It's not much of a problem atm, the only demanding game I play is arma 3. I get a solid 40fps on High settings.
