Graphics card TDP

What does graphics card TDP mean? I say somewhere that it's the maximum power consumption e.g 280x 250w TDP. I'm unsure, can you please tell me?

TDP stands for Thermal Design Power and it's the max power the the component will put out from which you can get an idea of heat output also.
