Hard Drive Issue

Hey all,

I’m having an absolute nightmare trying to figure this one out so thought I’d post to see if there was a simple (and potentially obvious) solution!
I’ve had my PC specialist rig since 2010 and it has been running a dream up until this point.

The Issue?

I turned my PC on for the first time in a few months and unsurprisingly, it was running a little slow. I then received a windows update notification which downloaded fine and restarted my computer. Upon re-boot, the computer was still running exceptionally slow so in order to see my background applications, I pressed CTRL ALT DELETE to enter my ‘Task Manager’. This took me to a ‘Please Wait…’ and was there for about 20mins. It seemed frozen so I forced a shut down.

This time on re-boot, I get an error message suggesting that I cannot boot from my installed hard disk.

It would seem that my hard disk isn’t being fully recognised. In an attempt to solve this, I’ve opened up the computer to check for any faulty/loose connections between my hard disk and motherboard. I then swapped my hard disk connection on my motherboard into a different SATA slot. Initially, this seemed to work as my boot menu had now listed my hard disk as a priority boot option.

However, when I do try boot from my hard disk, I get another error message.

Then, following a computer restart, my hard disk is no longer recognised and no longer an option in my boot menu!!

I’ve spent some time trying different SATA slots and connecting/reconnecting relevant wires and cables but nothing seems to allow me to boot correctly from my hard disk.

Of course, I then considered booting from my windows 7 install disc running a disk repair but this seems like a pointless exercise when my hard disk isn’t being fully recognised.

Help?

See below for the error message I get on boot up as things stand at the moment (and subsequent “Wait…” message when I press “F1 to resume”). FYI, my hard drive is connected into SATA 1.

Many thanks in advance for any help, I really do appreciate it!

Cheers!

Failed drive unfortunately.

I really was afraid you'd say that 😔

What would you recommend as a next step? New rig? Or is it best to just buy a new hard disk altogether? If so, could you possibly recommend one that might be suitable? Current PC spec below.

Thanks for your time, much appreciated!

I agree with SpyderTracks but to be sure, boot the Windows install DVD, select the repair option, open a command prompt and try running chkdsk on your hard drive from there. If that fails you need to call PCS.

PCS should offer to send a replacement drive, if you get the option I'd recommend a Western Digital Caviar Black, whatever size you want. They're the most reliable and fastest HDD's you can get.

Sadly this didn't seem to work when I tried it! It seems to be just failing to recognise the hard drive at all so any attempt at repair has been a dead end. I'll give it another shot before contacting PCS support.

SpyderTracks - that would be brilliant, I'll definitely be getting in touch with PCS support soon to see if they can help me out on that front then. Thanks for your help!

Cheers guys!

Agreed, call PCS and get the hard drive swapped. If you still have an issue after that then you'll probably need to RMA the whole thing.
