A warning to anyone planning on upgrading your PC further down the line.

Basically I bought my laptop in January last year. I've decided it's time to upgrade to a better CPU. Now I was told when I purchased the laptop that if I ever wanted to upgrade it, I could order the compatible parts using their upgrade system on the website and carry out the installation myself.

I phoned them up to see about next day delivery and they told me I could not purchase the part from them to fit myself and that I would have to send my laptop back to them and pay for them to fit it. To which I told them I didn't want to do that and I was capable of fitting it myself. I also said that their website was happy to let me pay £300+ and select the option to fit the hardware myself to which the guy on the phone replied with;

"well we wont send out the part as we want the laptop back to make sure it is compatible and the CPU might be soldered"

I said to the gentleman on the phone that the part was not soldered and that their "custom upgrade system" has already said it is compatible with my order yet he still refused to say that I could purchase the part.

Now I've decided I'm going to take my business elsewhere and I won't be ordering anything else from PC Specialist. The man was unhelpful, he didn't even seem interested in what I had to say, the quicker I got off the phone the better is the impression I got.

Now I know the forums aren't used for official complaints so I'll be emailing a complaint direct to them. This is mainly to warn any new potential customers that if you want to or have plans to upgrade your PC down the line that they will try and tell you to send it back basically to make extra profit for themselves.

I might be wrong but i thought the CPU was soldered on the Vortex Laptops. I'll check mine when i get home. I know the GPU pops out no problem. If that's the case i can see why they would be apprehensive about supplying this component. If anything goes wrong with it and it is damages or doesn't work it will cause a lot of complications for both Customer and the Client.

EDIT: Here is a picture i took on a previous thread showing the CPU on the left, it looks soldered in to the left of it and as a mobile cpu the majority of these are soldered.

I will have a look when i get home at 5.

One of their representatives on the live help chat told me that it wasn't soldered and that it was replaceable. The GPU on the other hand can't be changed according to their "custom upgrade system".

Yeah GPU is a pain in the neck. Although physically it can fit there needs to be a BIOS and DRIVER compatibility as a result im stuck with a HD6990 on my Vortex.

Are they saying they can send a CPU out on live chat?

To begin with they said they would rather replace the part then it turned into only they can replace the part and they won't send me one to do myself. Any idea where I can buy processors from?

No idea about where to find CPUs, as far as I know mobile CPUs are hard to source and also expensive. Apart from the email I would suggest giving them a call to file your complaint. If you though the sales representative over the phone was unhelpful.

Yeah I've looked everywhere and it's hard to find somewhere that seems legit.

Had the Vortex III, was able to upgrade the i7 3610 to a 3630, all I did was source a CPU, was a very quick and easy job to change the CPU in that model.
