Feedback/reviews/opinions for the Proteus II?

Months on and I'm still deliberating over my new laptop config! I'm now trying to decide whether to go for the Optimus VI or Proteus II. Although I would get the better gpu with the Proteus, I really don't like the look of it. I have to say, in the top-down view of the keyboard it looks cheap imho. While looks won't be the ultimate deciding factor, it is putting me off substantially. I do want to be swayed to get it though, simply because it's better value for money. Reviews or snippets of feedback would really help. How are the keyboard and trackpad? Does it cool well even under stress? How's the fan noise? Any issues with anything at all?

Does anyone know why on Earth only the 500GB Samsung Hybrid SSHD is available for Proteus, not the 1TB? Surely they're the same dimensions?

If I go for the Optimus, I'm unsure whether to go for a 15 or 17 inch. Portability and weight aren't an issue for me, this will not leave the house. I was wondering if there were any benefits to a 17 inch screen (apart from screen real estate & picture size)? I thought I remembered reading somewhere that a 17 inch chassis is better at cooling than 15 inch, but couldn't for the life of me find anything about that when I tried Googling.

is it for gaming? I doubt there would be a noticeable difference in terms of both keyboards/trackpads but I don't own any so can't really provide feedback on those.

Yes, mostly gaming, some graphics editing and the usual minor stuff like internet and watching vids.

I should clarify, by asking about the trackpad I was wondering more about the position. I'd be using a mouse for gaming. It seems a good thing it appears further right in relation to the spacebar, was just wondering what users thought.

I am seriously considering Optimus VI too atm, I am just wondering how good it is at fan control management. The previous Optimus V is known to either run low on noise or kick in loud and since I already had such laptop which wasn't handled well by Ubuntu I'd like to avoid this issue because it indeed was so annoying that for this reason only I had switched back to Windows.

Proteus II has 500gb rpm 7200 hdd available which could be sufficient enough, considering u can get external HDD for more safe storage, however the Proteus is regrettably out of question for me due to it's ridiculous look despite better value for your money. I still think Cosmos has the most decent looking chasis here on PC Specialists.

*Bump*

Any Proteus owners out there? I'm growing more wary of the Optimus after reading about some issues. Even though I dislike the look of the Proteus, it's looking like it could be the one. Would like to hear from owners about it first though.

What issues do you mean ? I managed to find review on the clevo model on german notebookcheck and generally they were satisfied, even with the fan noice.
I don't see jumping into completly unknown waters very safe. Proteus might have the very same problems.

Would you mind pointing me towards that review please? Thanks! :) Having checked back I missed the fact the main issue I was concerned about (fan noise) was with the Optimus V (though there is an un-answered trackpad issue too and apparent driver issues with the sound card that are presumably easily fixed). Can anyone advise whether the fan issue was resolved with the VI please? An unsupported bios update which would invalidate the warranty isn't something I'm willing to do.

Indeed. Exactly why I'm so keen to read reviews/any snippet of feedback from owners. ;) As I said, I've been deliberating over this purchase for months already. :)

Fizzler, that's great. Any feedback you can give once you get your hands on it and maybe a little way down the road would be greatly appreciated. I'm looking at pretty much the same setup, but with 8GB ram and 240GB mSATA. :)

I will definetly let you guys know, since there are 0 reviews on it, I actually did look around before I bought it and I could not find a decent spec with a gtx970m, the ones that I found to be similar to my build were about £1200 with a few lower grade specs, If it lives up t my expectations ten its definetly a affordable yet high end laptop, you could even take out some of the extras an still have a decent gtx970m laptop for like 800

Hi I ordered the same laptop as you guys the proteus 2 (not arrive yet but have alot of technical detail). as far as i known there is little information on this laptop due to its re-branding name.

It original name is the Quanta NL8B FHD. It is almost identical to the COMPAL NL8, meaning they both have the same chassis but the GPU & CPU are the main difference.

Just so your aware the gpu is soldered and battery pack is not detachable without opening the back (integrated). Id recommend the 970m option if your buying this. The 960m isnt that good of a card if your gaming at 1080p (struggles on high-max settings with poor FPS)

it has 2 fans built in one for each side. The thermals as far as I know are quite low as standard. with the thermal paste option that PC specialist use will lower this by a few more celcius. The 2nd gen maxwell cards are known to produce less heat than the kepler variations.

The red outline on the trackpad has LED function so it lights up as well as the 2 red stripes on back. Top of the keyboard has macro buttons u can assign. The first button on left can turn off red lights (trackpad/cover) on/off and space bar for the white LED backlight keyboard.

The Quanta NL8B FHD (Proteus 2) isnt sold by many companies so +1 for PC specialist for having this model.
