The vortex is £1307 and the Octane is £1348. Memory set up is the same, I'm wondering if the desktop i5 is worth the extra over the mobile i7. Thanks.

Suggested bulid??

Vortex iv 17.3" under £1500 with a gtx 980m. Any suggested builds would be awesome! Intended use would be gaming, 3D Cad and using engineering software such as CFD on SolidWorks.

Thanks

So you wouldn't recommend less than 250gb SSD?

Processor decision.

Hello,

For the Octane 17.3", should I go for an i5-4690K or an i7-4790S?? The GPU will be gets 970m and I shall use the laptop for gaming and engineering software. It's just it saves a fair chunk of cash going for the i5!! So to put it plainly, would I notice a HUGE difference between them...?

Any advice would be helpful.

Thanks

The i7 has more cores and a lower TDP. I've got the octane with a i7-4790s and I've not once lacked for power. Guess more cores will be more future proof as games incorporate more CPU demands. The I7-4790k isn't a massive amount more and thats unlocked so you could overclock it but I can't see why you'd need it tbh. I'd be more worried about temps with an oc'd CPU. In my opinion I'd say go for the I7 you'll get more from it over time.

Ive got the 17" Octane with the i5-4690k/980m and it motors through games, have not seen the cpu maxed out yet.
I would get the 'K' cpu over the 'S' any day.
That is unless your engineering software makes use of hyperthreading, then go for an i7 cpu

It might be worth while pushing the boat out for the 980m, its about 30% stronger than the 970m, you wont regret it :)

I wish I could push out for the 980m! Just can't afford that extra amount! I'm sure the 970m will still impress me! I could stretch out to the 980m if I got the i5-4690. Is it a lot worse than the i5-4690k? I'm not going to be over locking.

If you're not overclocking it will be fine, the k just means it's unlocked for overclocking.

At the moment the 4690 is plenty strong enough to run the latest AAA games, the largest benefit is in going for the 980m. It also gives a more affordable path to follow future proofing your laptop.
Upgrading the gpu from a 970 to a 980 in future is going to cost a hell of a lot more than upgrading the cpu at a later date.

I'm probably going to go for the 980m with the i5-4690 then. Keeps it under £1500 with everything else! Thanks for your help :)

masyarrum I have merged all 3 of your threads together since they are all very much related, it's better if you can stick to one thread because it means people don't end up asking the same questions or saying the same thing more than once and often previous reponses will explain why you've made certain decisions :)
