Displayport causing power supply surge

I bought a 23in AOC monitor with my new desktop, which came with a hdmi cable and vga to dvi cable. My desktop uses the gtx980 ti gpu which comes with 1 hdmi port, 1 dvi and 3 displayports. I have a wacom Cintiq, which has to use the only hdmi port. I was using the vga to dvi for my monitor, but it wasn't very good. I bought a dp cable, which works fine once the PC has booted, but if I turn on the PC with the dp cable in, my PC wont even turn on. It will start and stop continuously until I unplug the dp cable. It's only when I use the wacom as a monitor that I can see the power supply surge message at boot up forcing me to go to the bios.

I have a work-around, but would prefer a solution.... If there is one.

Is the surge message 'ASUS power surge' ?

Are you able to try using a different DP cable at all? Could you also let me know what motherboard you have or which generation of CPU you have. If you have skylake/Z170 you can test the DP in your on-board graphics to see if the fault continues.

Yes it is an Asus power surge message.

I have wondered if it is a problem with the cable, but they are expensive so I only have one DP cable.
