Looking at a new PC, but unsure what to get..

Passmark isn't a benchmark I'd go to over pretty much anything else, like Cinebench, blender, etc and is rarely featured in reviews of hardware. I'm not really sure what passmark does to generate its scores tbh.

The specific page you linked is single threaded performance. It's obvious Intel CPUs still lead here since higher frequencies and small IPC lead. See Cinebench single threaded vs multithreaded:

You'd previously considered that in this thread I think and decided that it wasn't really worth the extra for the Intel for more single threaded performance.

This is your spec as AMD: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/saved-configurations/amd-am4-pc/PahKY322Bn/ (£1335)
This is the Intel equivalent: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/saved-configurations/intel-z370-pc/wJkQXbm8ur/ (£1464)

So up to you.

You could always wait and see if AMD close the gap with Zen 2 in 2019 ;)

With a mid/high end GPU you'll see virtually no difference between an R7 2700x and an i7 9700k (or i9 9900k for that matter). Football manager might care, but how much I can't say and it's up to you if it's worth £130 for a "?" amount of extra performance in 1 game. But I think this is all old territory.

Thanks for all your help and advice Oussebon :) I do want to buy now just want to make sure I make the right choice. Hence why this thread is so long :p

I just had another question I was looking at getting a 4K monitor as I have a Playstation 4 and would be using that in my PC room when I can't use our lounge 4K TV for any titles I can't play on PC. What graphics card would I need if I wanted to play in 4K for example? Also Football Manager works best with 1080P resolution from reading on the community forums, would I be able to lower the resolution of a 4K monitor if needed?

Any reccomendations on monitors would be appreciated :)

You can run a game at any resolution at or below a monitor's native resolution. So you can play at 1440p or 1080p on a 4k monitor. Apparently 1080p on 4k doesn't look quite as good as 1080p on 1080p, though I guess FM is mostly the UI so it's not such a big deal.

If you want to game at 4k resolution on fairly high settings in modern titles, an RTX 2080 (successor to GTX 1080 ti) would be the usual recommendation. Some less demanding titles with carefully managed settings could be run on an RTX 2070 (i.e. GTX 1080 successor). Google benchmarks of your favourite titles for an idea. e.g:
civilization-vi_3840-2160.png hellblade_3840-2160.png
Civ 6, probably fine with RTX 2070. Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, probably not fine.

You will ideally want a gsync monitor for 4k gaming.

Or as an alternative to the RTX 2070 if that sort of performance level is adequate for you at 4k, a Vega 64 with a freesync monitor (as long as the range goes down to 40hz).

If you decide to stick to the RX 580 and just play at 1080p on a 4k monitor, you probably still want the 4k monitor to have freesync anyway.

Hi Oussebon,

Just seen your post in The Scotster's thread and I think I may well wait until January 9th to see what AMD announce at CES. As you say if that leak is correct then the 3700X wouldd be great value for money it seems :)

It may be they only announce the server parts, or that whatever they say we need to wait a while for desktop bits, but for the sake of 6 days for systems where CPU performance is important it seems odd not to wait

Hi Guys,

So I have finally ordered my PC tonight and the below is what I have gone for:

My maximum budget was £1,000 really but I think the above spec seems really good value for money. Thanks to all forum members and especially Oussebon :)

I had trouble deciding what case as I was going to go for PC Specialists full tower case but that seemed overkill for my needs as I am looking for a fairly budget build.

Thoughts or suggestions on last minute changes would be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks

Andrew

Looks fine.

I don't think you need/really benefit from the extra case fans.

What monitor is this going with, remind me?

I was just going to get a 1080P monitor with Freesync to start with.

Would you say a TN or IPS panel would be best?

Also I just wondered what your thoughts are on the PCS SR-819 RGB FULL TOWER CASE? :)

Thanks

Andrew

I wouldn't buy one of those cases because I know nothing about it. If I wanted tempered glass and RGB fans I'd buy a Corsair 460X or 570X because at least I know they have good airflow and good quality fans. They're a known quantity.

If you mean a dirt cheap ~£120 monitor, look at the AOC G2460VQ6 24". The freesync range on it is crazy.

Do you think the Fractal Focus G will be ok and not too cheap?

Hi All,

Just thought I would post here as I have now had my PC for just over a month and I am delighted with it :)

Although Ryzen 3rd Gen is coming out in July, so might be worth a CPU upgrade already? 😁
