Looking at a new PC, but unsure what to get..

And, being a laptop, you can't upgrade the GPU should you ever move to something more demanding than FM :) Plus the CPU is less powerful.

Also Oussebon I was wondering whether to go for a slightly more expensive case as cooling would be important to me and hopefully be as quiet as possible.

What do you think of the black and white limited edition Coolermaster case?

Cheers

I think you've just described the Fractal R5 case and Noctua CPU cooler combo.

While the CM690 III is apparently decent for cooling, the Fractal is fine as well and is lined with noise dampening material. It also has a 3-speed fan controller where you can turn the fans down to be whisper-quiet.
The Noctua CPU cooler's among the quietest in its class.

If you don't need a DVD drive or have an external one you can use, you can opt for the Fractal Define S, which is cheaper but offers the same kind of performance as the R5 for acoustics and thermals. Trade offs for the lower price include not having the fan controller and not having optical drive bays.

If you really want it quiet you could get the RM850x PSU, as it has a passive mode where under certain temp and load thresholds it will cool itself without needing to switch on its fan. In real terms your PC is pretty much guaranteed not to trigger either condition and so the PSU would be silent. But that's ~£80 more on its own

The combo of the R5, Noctua and RMx PSU will give a very quiet PC. If you can afford it, I would definitely go for it if noise levels are important to you.

Hi All,

Looking to order my new PC today but was just wondering if its worth adding extra case fans?

I was looking at going for the InWin G7 Black Gaming Case

Cheers

If it's an i7 CPU and a GTX 1050 in that case you're not likely to derive any meaningful benefit off more fans. If you decide you want some in the future you can add them in pretty easily though I don't see that you would.

Thanks again Oussebon - Sorry to keep asking questions!

Would you go for the InWin G7 Black Gaming Case over the blue Cooler Master case? I was originaly looking at the Enigma case but that does not look like it has great ventilation.

Which one, the COOLERMASTER ELITE 311 BLUE CASE ? I would definitely recommend the Inwin GT7 over it, I'd pretty much never recommend that cooler master case to anyone as it has only 1 preinstalled fan and has no front facing USB 3.

The Engima case is also a bad idea as you'll be limiting your upgrade options and it probably has pretty poor air flow.

Don't cheap-out on the case, you'll regret it for cooling performance and upgrade options. If you're utterly desperate to save a few £ the Inwin GT1 is as low as I'd suggest you go.

Thanks Oussebon :)

What do you think of the Corsair case which is £1 more?

Any other more expensive ones you recommend? The only thing I am not to keen on is the cases with a Perspex side.

If you mean the corsair that's £1 more than the G7

I'm worried we might be going in circles by this stage :)

Your right I am just going to go for the G7! :)

Also I was wondering what to do, I have selected Windows to be installed, but I just realised I have a disc already so would just need to purchase a product key, would you say its worth saving the £90 pound? Obviously I would hae to install the OS myself.

When your choose a OS in your build, is there any bloat ware installed by PCS?

Just one other thing - Would you say liquid processor cooling is only worth it if you are overclocking? The Noctua cooler does not fit the Inwin G7 case unfortunately.

Cheers Oussebon :)

The cost of Windows in the PCS build is the cost of the license/product key - if you already have a license key you don't even need the disc, you can just download the ISO from Microsoft :) In other words unless you have a valid license/product key already or can get it cheaper because you are a student or have an MSDN subscription it doesn't save any money to get it from elsewhere.

No bloatware at all :)
Though if you select the AV option or the Office option in the configurator they will be installed.

PCS didn't install any bloatware on either computer I've bought from them - you get the OS, the drivers (and any software you order e.g. office, antivirus) but that's it. Make sure to uncheck the free office and bulldog AV trials when ordering if you don't want those.

The cost of Windows is the licence rather than the installation media. Beware of websites offering implausibly cheap Windows licence keys.

Liquid cooling is only worth it if you're overclocking (or certain other niche scenarios). The CM212x is fine if you're not overclocking. i.e. something like this build:

Final question I promise.. :D - What is the better graphics card out of the GTX 1050 or the Radeon RX480? :)

Thanks

RX 480 by a long way.
8GpT5L8EV6YvCAsmLiHG4S-650-80.pngLL6EiTYKU2AsNha3a9WvQc-650-80.png

There's relatively little performance difference between the RX 480 4gb and RX 480 8gb. It's a good card for the price, and suitable for enthusiasts on a budget or casual gamers who want a bit of futureproofing. It will run most modern games somewhere between high and ultra, many closer to ultra. It will be a long time before it can't run new releases at all.

Finally looking to order my desktop now pay day has come, but I was just wondering in regards to RAM it seems the Kingston HyperX Fury is cheaper than the Kingston DUAL. Is the HyperX Fury better?

Thanks :)

For 16gb the HyperX Fury is technically a bit better, I believe it has a slightly lower latency. The extent you'd notice in most day to day activities or gaming would be questionable. But the HyperX Fury is cheaper and theortically a bit better for 16gb there's no reason I can think of not to buy it :)
