Looking at a new PC, but unsure what to get..

For 16gb the HyperX Fury is technically a bit better, I believe it has a slightly lower latency. The extent you'd notice in most day to day activities or gaming would be questionable. But the HyperX Fury is cheaper and theortically a bit better for 16gb there's no reason I can think of not to buy it :)

Thanks Oussebon :)

I was looking at the Savage is that better than the HyperX Fury? Or would peformance difference be barely noticetable?

Thanks

I don't know is the answer. Some games benefit greatly from faster DDR4:
gUE3VEk.png

Others will barely see a difference. Most games only see an FPS or two difference here and there. I've no idea which category Football Manager falls into.

It's £40 more for the 2666MHz DDR4 than the 2133MHz Fury, however. You're probably better off spending that on other things for casual gaming (assuming you'll dabble in some other titles in the coming years). If you were thinking of buying a GTX 1050 for example, those £40 would pay for most of the difference between for an RX 470 graphics card, which is a lot better.

What's the current spec you're minded to?

Thanks Oussebon :) - This is what I was looking at:

I have just discovered the SM961 is out of stock, so did wonder whether to buy this elsewhere and fit it myself?

Also I already have a Windows License Key, so wont need an operating system, so just undecided what to do with the hard drive really.

Please feel free to suggest alternative configuration as don't really want to have to wait until middle of February :(

If you are happy to go with the basic HDD until you can get a SM961 I would go with that and order now. the Samsung is a great drive but it will be no hassle fitting one yourself when they become available. I tried Amazon and a couple of other places today and was unable to order one so think it is just a case of waiting.

Thanks Stephen sounds like a plan :) - I did check Scan earlier and it seemed they had the 256gb size in stock. Obviously may be an error on their website though.

There are definitely 128 and 256gb variants available if you shop around, I spoke to a couple of stockists earlier.
If you find 512gb you'll be very lucky!

PCS do seem to have the 256GB and 1TB in stock it seems as its not telling me when clicking proceed from the configurator. So I might just go with the 256GB. I can always upgrade at a later date I guess :)

Would you bother going with a 3.5" Sata Hard Drive as well? Or would you say just stick to SSD as thats going to become the norm eventually?

Cheers :)

You might find that is the PM drives you are selecting rather than the SM variety? I know the SM drives had basically all went out of stock :(

In that configuration you've got a 500gb HDD. Not sure if that was just a placeholder, so to speak, while you were working out what to do about SSDs, but if you are buying an HDD I'd upgrade that 500gb one to a 1TB one for ~£4 as it's faster (larger cache) and double the storage.

You also have the 650W VS series. You might as well drop that down to a 450/550W VS series and save £20-30 (you won't need a 650W PSU without a multi-GPU setup).

Alternatively for another £15 get the CS 650W PSU which is better build quality, more efficient, and has modular cables (which means fewer unnecessary cables hanging around inside your case, getting in the way and obstructing airflow.

But I wouldn't really go for the VS 650.

As for the GPU I'd probably go with the RX 480 4gb which is £10 more than the GTX 1060 3gb. 3gb VRAM is a little slender. Even something like Civilisation 6 (and you might not think of Civ as being a brutally demanding game) uses over 3gb VRAM.
With the RX 470 vs GTX 1060 3gb, you're having to pick between a somewhat weaker GPU with more VRAM, or a stronger card that in some games might be a bit limited for memory. I'd just eliminate the dilemma altogether for £10 more.

Thanks Ousebonn, yeah that drive was just placeholder but it now seems they have got the SM 256GB and 1TB in stock so was going to go with the 256GB and order a 1TB SATA Drive for any other storage I may need.

I would say no. The price difference of changing the WD Black in that quote to a regular HDD is £34(!?!?).

While a WD Black is faster, I'd rather save the money or buy a 2TB HDD instead and still have a tenner left over. I own a WD Black and it has given me good service, but won't be buying any more for my mass storage due to the huge price premium.

Cheers Oussebon - I do have a external WD Elements 1TB External USB hard drive as well, would you still go for a extra drive in my build?

256gb doesn't get you very far if you're having the OS, programs, games, and other bits on it so extra storage is probably a good idea.

I'm not sure what you currently have on the external disc but I would advise against using it as primary storage. The 'usual' way to do things is to have your programs on your SSD, your files and any games that don't fit onto the SSD on your HDD, and to use an external HDD to back up files in case your internal SSD or HDD die. Also portable external drives are often a bit slower than internal HDDs as well.

So you don't lose important documents, save games you have lots of hours invested into, re-rip your whole CD collection, etc etc.

Hi All,

So have been tinkering around with my build over the last couple of days and think I have settled on the below:

https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/saved-configurations/intel-z270-pc/VmcB6qvmeT/

I would of gone for a RX 480 but as I have chosen fast track its not available and I really would like the PC a bit quicker.

If anyone here could have a final look over my build that would be greatly appreciated :). As always feel free to recommend any alternatives if there is any savings to be made on the price or something better that I should go with. I originally had a budget of £1200, but I have gone over as I want to at least try and future proof myself a bit and get something that will last me a good five years.

Thanks all :)

Andrew
