Gaming benchmarks by PC Per:

Note that this is Vega Frontier Edition which is a pro card and not aimed at gamers. However, AMD have given it a gaming mode and are marketing it as being very capable at gaming.

The gaming performance is sub GTX 1080, while power consumption is more than a GTX 1080 ti. It beats the Titan in many of the benches that it's really aimed for and people are pointing to features which curiously aren't enabled (yet?) and the usual comments about performance improving with better drivers.

On the other hand, the length of time it's taken to appear, the hype and expectations vs what we're beginning it see of its performance in gaming, the power consumption, and the fact Vega FE wasn't sent to reviewers, is troubling.

I didn't expect this to beat the 1080 Ti for gaming. Since it's not really a gaming card, but if this is the best they've got then we may assume that they are going to target a similar market to the RX480, if not a little higher with better bang for buck and just leave the top cards to Nvidia.

Some firestrike scores:

VC suggests the top one is an overclocked Vega. Still too early to call it seems. Will need to see launch performance and price I guess. And to a degree power consumption..

Some good news about Vega 56 since launch at least.

Apparently downvolting helps with performance: http://www.gamersnexus.net/hwreviews/3020-amd-rx-vega-56-review-undervoltage-hbm-vs-core
Probably a certain % of units it can't be done on and so to increase the numbers available for sale AMD stuck with the higher stock voltage for them all.

Vega 56 can apparently take a modded BIOS and get to be nearly as fast as a Vega 64 https://videocardz.com/72299/amd-radeon-rx-vega-56-gets-faster-with-vega-64-bios

It's not like anyone who bought a 1080 a year ago is going to be regretting the purchase, but as and when Vega 56 is more available it will at least open options.
