UltraNote IV - 15" Review

I am very happy with this laptop, it has everything I wanted and even more. I've used linux for a couple of years on my desktop, naturally I would love to continue using it on a laptop. I can safely say that this laptop might be one of the best to use with linux, everything works very well under linux.
Has for the hardware, with the i5 it's very fast at web browsing and most day-to-day work. The fan only kicks in when doing more intensive work, and when it does it's noticeable but not too bad.
The touchpad compared to my previous laptop (emachines e250) is very good and in windows 10 is detected as 'Precision Touchpad', meaning it supports lots of gestures.
With my previous laptop being ~7 years old, I don't have much experience with laptop keyboards, but to me this one seems very good. I don't think I will mind writing my school work on this laptop. The only complain I can make is the lack of indicator physical led for the status of CapsLock/numlock/scrollock keys.
Battery life is as stated in the specs, about 5-6 hours with moderate usage. I'm glad that PCspecialist din't exaggerate on the numbers, as other manufacturers do.
For those who care, it also has TPM 2.0 and ability to set custom secure boot keys. I haven't configured my linux installation to use them yet but I like having the possibility to do so in the future.
Highly recommend an ssd for boot drive, and if possible an NVME one. With the one I have Windows boots in less than 15s and that is with fastboot disabled.

The laptop took 8 working days to be built and dispatched which is within the 7 to 9 days promised. The delivery was fast, 4 days, also within the 4-5 days promised.

Pros:
- Great for day-to-day work (Web browsing, media consumption, office work)
- Has TPM 2.0 (Required to encrypt disk using bitlocker on Windows 10)
- Webcam has an led that lights up when is use

Cons:
- Sleep button far away from fn key making it almost impossible for me to reach both with one hand.
- Every time the laptop reboots/suspends/shutdowns the keyboard backlight resets to the second setting.
- No indicator leds for capslock/numlock/scrollock status.
- Speakers are very tinny and not very loud.
- The case is a bit of a fingerprint magnet and the oils in the hands can create dark patches that can stay until cleaned off.

Overall I am very happy with this purchase and hope it will last for many years.

Good review, cheers

What's it like for mobility? I'm torn between this and the Latife III- basically the Ultranote gives me an objectively better laptop for less money but it weighs almost a kilo more and as I'll be having to cart it about with me quite a bit that might be quite a big difference. I'm thinking 2.2kg might be fairly manageable though. How have you found it carry-weight wise, or do you not really move it about much?

Cheers

While I do plan to carry it with me to uni, it just hasn't started yet (Just a couple more weeks). So I can't say for sure how it is, but with my experience carrying it around the house, it's not bad.
For me, while the weight is on the heavier side, it's tolerable, and might be just fine for a more fit person. IMO the size is the limiting factor in the mobility of the laptop. It's just big enough to make it uncomfortable for carrying it around while open for more than a couple minutes. But for carrying it under the arm it's fine.
In the end, It's definitely manageable, not the best for mobility but for me, I like having the bigger screen and numpad.
If mobility is a priority for you, the UtraNoteIV 14" might be a good middle ground between the UltraNoteIV 15" and the Lafite III. If you can, I also recommend going to a physical store and get the feel and weigh of the laptops in display. That's what I did and quite a few of the laptops had very similar dimensions and weight to this one.

Edit: Also the extra thickness on the battery compartment provides a good place to grip the laptop while holding under the arm, which I find very useful.
