Laptop build compatible with Windows 7 Pro

Assuming it's not been shipped to you yet...

The -H series CPUs are available again for that laptop. You can get a quad core i5 7300HQ for only £22 more than the dual core i5 7200U.

The M.2 SSD is small and slow. It's arguably a waste of the M.2 slot. It costs £60, but for about £40 more you can get the PM961 which is extremely fast and twice the size. If budget is an issue I'd go as far as to suggest removing the Kingston drive from the order and adding the PM961 as a DIY upgrade when funds allow.

Too late, it arrived within a week

So easy to keep creeping the budget up, but a ton over the original was all I could scrounge XD

I must say I am uber impressed by this laptop, the build quality and service. And I never say this lightly

I have abandoned W7 in favour of Ubuntu 16.0X, simply ( and defeatedly) because most things worked out-of-the-box from Ubuntu

The USB, the Short cut keys, screen resolution, card reader ... you name it. Yet to find a problem

It even recognized my ram to be 2400 MHz

some more linux support would be appreciated though.

Many thanks PC Specialist

Glad you are pleased with it and that Ubuntu went on OK, although it has worked on all three of my PCS machines, albeit with a bit of a GPU problem but that was specific to the 960M on the old Optimus and that is now cleared up with Ubuntu 17.10.

Linux support is a bit of a problem but I can see PCS's side as well, there are so many distros available that it would be impossible to offer full support for all of them and I am not sure where they would stand legally if they offered a partial support, even if they went for a specific few there would always be an argument on which should be included, an obvious first three could be Ubuntu, Mint and Debian but even then there are things like Fedora that is very popular.

Hopefully the Linux threads on these fora help a bit, I try to post anything I think worthwhile as it crops up and it is often worth checking on the Distrowatch site as some of the reviews on there can be useful.

Yes, I'm very pleased with it, and many thanks for you and other's input, much appreciated.

I understand about the linux support issue, but this forum is certainly a good place to start.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience dealing with background noise when using things like Skype, or livestreaming with OBS.

I have enabled the echo cancelling option on the sound input and output, which reduced the hiss by about half, but it still sounds like it's recording underwater.

I've mucked about with Alsamixer, tried to configure JACK to go through SoX via a loopback (I really don't know what I'm talking about here, lol), and even tried this script to no avail

https://cubethethird.wordpress.com/...se-cancellation-of-microphone-input-on-linux/

I have little to no knowledge about audio, but I do know the same headset and mic, works just fine on my other Win7 laptop, with a simple tick box in sound recording settings to reduce background sound to zero.

I'll keep searching for a solution, as this machine was intended to be used for live streaming, but at the moment I have to use Win7 as currently Ubuntu 16.04 is unacceptable in sound quality.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated
