ITX + Thunderbolt 3

Hi all,

I need to build an ITX PC with Thunderbolt 3 ports, over minidisplay and/or over USB-C,
not only USB 3 but Thunderbolt 2 over minidisplay and/or Thunderbolt 3 over USB-C
I don't see any similar option on PC Specialist, am I missing something?

I would basically add something like an Gigabyte Alpinde Ridge Thunderbolt to my build

Thanks!

So you’d need the aurus 7 gigabyte motherboard which that add in card is compatible with.

Edit: just saw you want ITX? Don’t think you’d get those features on an itx board.

Thank you SpyderTracks,

you mean it's impossible to have an ITX w/ TB3 in general?

I'm not aware of anything. Usually TB is a modular add-on, it never really caught on on mainstream PC's as yet. I could be wrong with new boards, but I'm not aware of any.

Why do you need TB anyway? It's usually related to a Mac environment.

Was it you OP who was asking about this in another thread (reference ATX mobos)?

If so I'd echo what Spyder said. Note my comments about the Aorus Gaming 7 that unlike the Z270 generation doesn't have its own thunderbolt, only support via an add in card. i.e. support seems to be getting trimmed down by manufacturers, not enhanced.

oh no it is my first post about that, could you please link yours?

professional audio and video interfaces + thunderbolt dock usage,
IMHO is still the most versatile protocol when you deal with audio and video production,
very different from USB3

sounds really bad :(
I've a thunderbolt port on my ROG G751 and I use it really a lot!!
Anyway it seems I may have two basic options

1. Aorus Gaming 7, ATK + support card (e.g. Gygabte Alpine Rig)
2. Z270, ATK, integrated Thunderbolt

But nothing in the ITX world, right?

Yep, that’s right, it’s only higher end ATX boards that have TB options.

Sorry, was on my phone when typing my post yesterday and wasn't easy to check if you were the same poster. Here's the other topic: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/foru...ith-2-Thunderbolt-ports&highlight=thunderbolt

Not in PCS's ITX world. No idea whether it exists / what the options are outside that.

I would rule out Z270 as an option as you're getting older CPUs with fewer cores and slightly lower frequencies too quite often, which sounds like a bad idea for audio and video production, and just about anything else really.

at this point my only option seems to be an ATX machine based on

Aorus Gaming 7, ATK + support card (e.g. Gygabte Alpine Rig)

and give up about ITX or mATX world,

even because nothing new seems coming in the next few months :(

There are new motherboards coming out soon from Intel I believe, but mostly lower end than what's available now (The H-, B- chipsets rather than the Z_70-, which is traditionally the highest end consumer mobo tier. I don't know when/if Z390 is coming out, but you can always look up the rumours and decide if you want to wait.

If you look at PCS's GPU prices versus general retail ones, PCS's prices are at about what 'regular' prices should be. e.g. the GTX 1060 3gb is about £180-£190 instead of near £300.

Not entirely sure how they manage that, but worth bearing in mind.
