Hey all. I was intending to get the Octane IV 17 inch with a GTX 1080, but the product was out of stock when I wanted to make my purchase. The newer model Octane V appeared a few days later, but was over my £2000 budget (Blame the wife).
Anyway...I took a gamble with PCS and went for the Octane IV 15 inch, with good specs bringing the total to £1994 with the upgraded thermal paste, dead pixel guarantee and the Silver Service warranty. 16GB of 2400MHZ Vengeance, 256GB of the Samsung PM961 SSD and 1 TB Seagate Firecuda SSHD. Took the standard delivery option of 4-6 days, and the Laptop arrived exactly on time, no fuss....The outer packaging was a bit worse for wear, but the Bubblewrap did the job....Everything in perfect working order.
After boot up, which took less than 5 seconds, I was in. First job was to download Afterburner & Rivatuner, along with CCleaner.
First impressions....
The good.....Pretty much everything. The laptop is ultra responsive...Click and it happens. Online streaming of youtube at 4K 60fps is flawless with my current 60+ MBps Fibre Optic broadband...The 4K IPS Screen is very good...Highly detailed, good viewing angles and the colours pop.
Did a few benchmark tests, and according to the usermenchmarks.com test, my laptop is a UFO for all benchmarks, achieving a result in the 79th percentile of similar specs laptops.
The only game I've had chance to play so far is Planet Coaster, which I have been playing in Ultra, 4K, locked to 30fps with Riva Tuner and everything is playing great. CPU usage is around 35% with average CPU temps of 70 degrees. At the same setting, GPU is using around 90% resources and average temp around 70-83%....Things have not got hotter than that after several hours of play, and that is with the fan speeds set to automatic. Upon using controls to up the fan speed to max, GPU went down to an average of around 70 degrees...Well within safe limits. Upon using a laptop cooler, temperatures fell by around 2-4 degrees. Switching settings to 1080p ultra, led to GPU temp reduced to the mid 60's and similar for GPU....Even at 4k with a large park, CPU usage was mid 30% and temps in the mid 60's.
The bad....The only complaints I have so far is the mild backlight bleed in the bottom left and right part of the screen, with similar, but less noticeable in the top corners. I understand that with IPS screens, this is a certain compromise to be made, and to be honest, apart from on pitch black scenes, it is not really noticeable.
All in all, I am utterly impressed by the purchase. I had my reservations about going for a lower specced version of a laptop from a company that I had only known about via online recommendations...But so far, albeit after only 3 days of owning the laptop, I can only recommend PC Specialist and their top class service, value for money and high performing laptop that they have provided me with. I hope to have some new benchmarks over the coming weeks and am happy to answer any questions about the laptop.
