Monitor opinions - ASUS VP28UQG 28" 4K UHD

Hi All,

I am thinking of looking at getting a new monitor for my setup. (For the setup you can see https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?58387-Gaming-PC-Spec-Advice-request as I haven't got around to writing it my signature )

I'm nosing around and looking to get the most for my cash - wondering what people think of ASUS VP28UQG 28" 4K UHD? I'm trying to pick out one from a sea of options so all suggestions welcome.
I am currently running three monitors - one HD TV getting a tad old, one monitor which does OK but is older than the TV, and one very old indeed monitor (looking to replace).
I would like to replace the TV at some point as its the larger screens which usual get me the most giddy excited, but for now I'd like to get a monitor replacement and I'm thinking might as well go for a decent spec one.

The one quoted I really have picked out just from looking here for inspiration and looks to be an ok price, size etc. I've seen an image of the back suggesting it can't be wall mounted but documentation suggesting otherwise (and it would seem really odd that it wouldn't be available for current monitors). Display port connectivity is the only one I'm concerned about really. Price-wise I wouldn't want to get too high so the £300 mark is what I'm taking as to shoot for - but all options considered (reasonable ones anyway!). Outside of this, the VP28UQG seems to fit the bill. So really what would someone more learned than I say (arguably what would someone learned say).

Thanks for reading

If you're gaming at 4k having sunk what £2500, into a gaming PC, and then hundreds more into a new monitor, you should only consider 4k monitors with gsync.

You can find these for a bit under £500.

I confess I searched second when I should have first and found your responses indicating so - so having followed that found Acer Predator XB281HK was talked about fitting this recommendation. Given the help given on the PC build, I consider yours - sound advice of course.

I’ve got one of the Acer monitors as you can see in my sig. whilst it’s definitely a lower end TN panel, it’s still very good. I’ve got mine paired with a Gtx1080 and run as low as 30fps and the gsync is an absolute must at 4K 60hz, makes a world of difference. Even at 30 FPS I don’t notice any juddering or tearing, it’s smooth as butter. Below that obviously you’ll start noticing it.

I’d highly recommend the monitor for the budget, often found near £400

Hi both,
Got the Acer Predator XB281HK but can't get it going - hoping for some expert advice.

I'll try to keep it brief to start - monitor connected today and after it not connecting for a little while it connected up. Initially it ran at a very nice resolution - until I hit the Nvidia GeForce Experience app and suddenly it dropped to 1024x768 (and only another low option available). I tried reinstalling drivers and - after the issue I will describe next - downloading the driver direct from Nvidia - but to no joy.

At this point I am in the position where if I turn the monitor on it seems to be recognised by the machine but no display/detected by the monitor - and if I start the GeForce experience app the running monitors both lose connection (until machine restart).
If I leave the monitor disconnected the other two run OK and the Experience App runs/closes without any hint of an issue.

Any ideas?

What's your full spec, and what monitors are you using? The XB281HK and any others?

Are you plugging your monitors into the graphics card or the motherboard?

Are you using HDMI or DP?

Other monitors are: Sony Bravia TV KDL-42W706B (main display) and iiyama PLG2773 Monitor

All plugged into the graphics card. Might be mistaken but don't think I have available connection to the motherboard.

The Acer is connecting to DP, TV HDMI, and the iiyama monitor is HDMI, into a HDMI to DP converter into the graphics card.

The motherboard definitely has video outputs (DVI, HDMI, and DP to be exact, https://www.asus.com/uk/Motherboards/ROG-STRIX-Z370-E-GAMING/specifications/ ) though if you're not using them, that's by the by I guess. :)

That iiyama is 1080p 120hz and the TV is 1080p 60hz (right?).

Apologies if I've misunderstood, but in your posts I'm not sure if you mentioned whether you've tried just the Acer monitor and no other monitors plugged into the system? Have you tried the Acer on its own to see how it is?

Apologies on the double post - and the motherboard question - was being blind and missing them.
Correct on both counts with the other monitors.
At present when I try with just the Acer plugged in - the monitor shows the BIOS screen, but then after (around the time the windows login would be showing) loses connection

Does it work if you boot Windows into safe mode? (assuming you can actually get into safe mode, Windows 10 seems to make it harder than it used to be....)

If your PC does not present you with this screen, you can try starting your PC from a USB recovery drive. It’s best if you’ve made one ahead of time, but in a pinch, you can create one from another PC running the same version of Windows.

It’s also possible that you can mash the F8 key during boot (but before Windows starts trying to load) to access these screens. Some PC manufacturers disable this action, and on some PCs, startup is fast enough that it’s hard to hit the key at the right time. But, there’s no harm in trying.

If you can get into safe mode and you still have an image on your screen, the chances are it's driver / software related.

Well I gave this a go - but I don't believe it fired into safe mode. Gave the machine a restart and after letting it check the disc with the Acer disconnected - I went to plug in the Acer on the off chance. At this point it kicked into life and allowed the higher resolutions. They joy of getting it to live has me trying to keep things stable for a while.

I have given a game a quick go on it (not a particularly taxing one) and it has stayed alive and high def. The next hurdle will be a machine restart but after the depression of the issue I am just happy to have it running. Planning on avoiding the GeForce app for at least a little while. Will report back if I see further issues or after a little while and everything has stayed in working order. Thanks for the assistance so far.
