As part of the 40th anniversary, Intel are planning to give away 8086 8086K processors.

The competition is here - https://game.intel.com/8086sweepstakes/ (though at time of writing, not actually open for another couple of days).

Apparently the i7 8086K (which I hadn't even heard of, til Ouss mentioned it in another thread) will clock to 5GHz

Me too!

And the 6800

And the 6502

And...yeah...we're old :)

I didn’t get into computing TIL quite late, started off with a Commodore 64 when I was 6 or so.

This does look like a sweet processor on paper, will be interesting to see some benchmarks. I may well invest as still on a 4770k platform, it’s about time I upgrade.

I started on the ZX81, Three more years before I get a 40th anniversary version. I remember getting an expansion to double its memory - to 2K!

Thanks for the heads up :) My 3770k is still fine for most uses, but FO4 would sure benefit from that kind of goodness. 500 units for the UK sounds like pretty good odds to me!

Did you ever use a small paperback book published by Babani Publishing called 'The Secrets of the Commodore 64'?? I co-wrote that. :)

Nice one.

Looks like you can still buy a copy: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Secrets-Commodore-64-Phil-Cornes/dp/0859341100 (assuming that's the right one).

Funnily enough we didn't do much Z80 but our 6502 programming was initially done on what the lecturer called a D5E evaluation kit, but what, it turns out, the rest of the world called the Kim-1: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KIM-1

You had no choice on those bad boys - you HAD to key in your program in hex.

One of the projects I had to do was hook up a bar code wand. And then print it back out on a home made plotter.

The first issue I ran into was lack of memory so I also ended up having to design and build a RAM module. I think I added a whopping 8K to it from memory, just to store a lookup table.
