PCS don't do specific student discounts as far as I know.

However, if you tell us what you will be using the laptop for, we may well be able to suggest a spec that does all you want it to but costs a good deal less.

What exactly will the laptop be for? Gaming? Anything else? Any specific software? :)

gaming and VR. i would also like to run server based applciations through VMWare and possibly use it for various programming tasks.

i would like to setup a virtual lab with it hosting server 2k16, CentOS, and networking VM's

The Octane with the GTX 1080 would actually be a bit cheaper, and sports a desktop i7 8700k.

It also has 4 slots for the RAM. So you could stick to 16gb RAM (generously more than enough for gaming and VR) and see if that suits your other needs too. If not, you still have the option to add more. RAM is very expensive at the moment so this would reduce the cost further.

The SSD is huge and expensive. Games can be transferred between drives very easily, with just a few mouse clicks in Steam etc
A 1TB SSD + an HDD for documents etc would be much better value, saving £300.

i just phoned PCS and they told me to post here and they would try to give me a discount.

are you saying that this isn't going to happen.

The forum community is almost entirely made up of customers like you and me. This would not be where to get a discount. To my knowledge, PCS don't offer student discounts.

I'm not sure what PCS told you. Your first post makes it sound like you posting it here will let them have a look and then advise you.. but that doesn't sound like the way they would do things in my experience. Perhaps there was a bit of miscommunication?

What we can offer you is advice on specs and options to save a load of cash. Since we don't work for PCS we don't have any agenda other than giving opinions on best value :)

i understand that you don't work for PCS, they just advised me to post here and they would look at my qoute and see if they provide a discount.

if your not in the position to give out discount, i wouldn't expect you to comment on the post

Perhaps it was more that we can recommend a way to get the spec price down without affecting performance. As said, I haven’t heard of PCS doing student discounts and they don’t generally view these forums.

Virtual machines is one area where the more RAM the better.

You can get away with oversubscribing the CPU to vCPU quite massively. An SSD will definitely help with IOPs so when booting multiple VM's, but not really that noticeable even on HDD's once they've started.

Depengind how many VM's you want to run though - if you assume 4GB RAM for the base system (IE your host OS), 2-4GB for each 2016 server (with 4 being better in terms of pure usability) and then depending what you expect to do with CentOS and the "network" machines, you may need another 2-4GB apiece, you may be better off stumping up for 32GB up front. It also gives you some headroom for adding in other VM's as well down the line.

If they said so on the phone, who knows. Always worth trying for a blag - could be the salesfolk you talked to have some leeway. Even if not, you'll get some good advice here so kinda helping you out to point you this way.

Effectively telling people to shut up is not the way to get help. In any case, what Oussebon says is perfectly true; PCS do not have a student discount program and I cannot believe that PCS would advise you that by posting on here you'd be more likely to get one.

In addition, asking for a student discount on a laptop that you plan to use primarily for 'gaming and VR' is a bit of a cheek, and the spec you have chosen is massive overkill for anything a student would require.

Perhaps if you chose a spec that was more suited to the needs of a student PCS might possibly consider helping you?
