Part upgrade or part new platform?

Hi All,

I'm currently running a Gigabyte H81m, with i5 4460, 16gb DDR3 Ram, Nvidia GTX 770 2gb, SSD's etc...

I mainly game, CS:GO, Cities, KF2, Pubg, Overwatch, Far Cry 5, Witcher 3 etc.. some photoshop, light video editing.

I'm looking to purchase a monitor probably a 1080p IPS Panel but which of the following should I do as I can do the whole system:

a) Upgrade the i5 to a i7 4770, then add a GTX 1060 6gb with a nice IPS monitor. My concerns are I'm just upgrading a dead platform and with all the hex cores out, games are starting to show actually we like 6 cores and will utilise them.

b) Go AM4, with a x470 board, 2600 CPU, 16gb DDR4 3000mhz ram, and maybe a smaller cheaper monitor - It just means I would have to live with the 770GTX for now or probably for a good few months.

Help, I really struggle to make up my mind in these situations, I have twins who cost the earth right now so wont get another chance to make a upgrade like this apart from small bits here and there.

Thank you :)

Unless this was a PCS built PC we can't help I'm afraid. We can only give advice on PCS builds.

In general terms, your old CPU is fine for most games at 1080p. Quite a few people apparently still run with the i5 2500ks from 2011.

I would probably recommend sticking it out with the old CPU until that is a problem, and then look for a new system.

As above, we can't advise in detail on non-PC Specialist systems, but these kinds of comments have been made a lot on the forums with people asking similar questions to you, so I'm sure they're fine :)

If a 1080p IPS monitor is an 'upgrade' for you, what is your current monitor?
