Gaming Laptop

Hey everyone

I'm thinking of getting a gaming laptop - never had on before. I play mainly WoW, with a bit of PUBG and Total War and Civ games. Don't have any experience with laptops, but want it to run well but also last at least 3-4 years. If you could look over this, I'd appreciate it.

We love you Ukraine
A couple of things to consider, the Octane is a desktop replacement, not designed as a laptop, so portability is poor, it has very weak batter life (because it's so powerful) and weighs a tonne! So if you're expecting it to be carried around the place, you may want to consider a different chassis.

The Octane uses a desktop processor, so it's about the most powerful chassis you can get.

The only amendment I'd make to that spec would be to replace the SSHD (really really dire performance) with an m2 drive from samsung or western digital black.

You really need an m2 drive in a build like that, anything else is going to hold it back.

I would also go with 2x8gb RAM if you can as then it can run in dual channel.

amended based on feedback! And I'm ok with the 'lack of portability' due to size etc, when I do move it, it will be to desks in different locations, for example.

Agree with above. The Octane is a great machine but not really portable, I only use mine outside home if i am going to be away for some time, for shorter trips I have a smaller laptop but if you are not worried by portability issues it is superb. Certainly drop the hybrid drive, most of us go with a 256GB fast m2 for the OS and main progs and a 1TB HDD for storage. I would also go with the Silver warranty, it is only a fiver more.

I'd have gone with faster RAM. 2666MHz seems to offer a decent hz vs £ ratio. You could go for 3000MHz though it is much more expensive.

Some games do benefit a lot from the extra frequency and spending so much on a system only to give it slow RAM seems a shame.

I have the octane 17" with a i7 8700k and GTX 1070 and 16Bb of 2400Mhz memory. I would of chosen faster memory but I only had the choice of 2133Mhz or 2400Mhz when I ordered last month. Its a great laptop and I'm quite happy with its performance but at the cost of fan noise. Yes it gets quite noisy when the temps get up on the CPU and GPU.

As for the hard drive I went with the 1 TB 7200 rpm HDD and added a intel Optane 32 GB cache module. Read speed is 1350 MB/s and write speed is 290 MB/s, not as fast as some of the m.2 modules out there but at £50ish its very good value and my boot time seems very quick. The 500GB WD Blue has read speed of 560 MB/s and write spead 530 MB/s, faster write but slower read than an optane. I went with the 32gb optane because I only had a set budget and a M.2 ssd would of taken me over. If money is no problem then go with a fast m.2 ssd.
