New Recoil II 15

Hi there,
I'm configuring a Recoil II 15 and I would like some information about mass storage.
I noticed that I can install 3 Hard drives and my main option is to install a 1TB 7200rpm HDD.
The laptop that I will replace already owns a Samsung 850 EVO SSD on which Windows 10 Pro is installed.
I would like to ask if selecting "No SSD" the physical connections for the 2nd and 3rd drive are present to be able to add this SSD and, in the future, to be able to update it.

Thank you so much.

Greetings, Matteo.

The detailed specifications tab on the configurator page for the Recoil II says the following about hard drive support...

Hard Drive
Type1 x 7mm, 2.5" S-ATA HDD support

M.2 Port
3 x M.2 Ports (1st for WLAN, 2nd for SSD M.2 2280 Card with SATA / PCIe Gen3x4 interface, 3rd for SSD M.2 2280 Card with SATA Interface)

...which means you can fit one sata hdd (the 1TB 7200rpm HDD you mention). The Samsung 850 EVO is (I believe) a SATA drive and there is no room in the Recoil II for two SATA drives. Your SSD will have to be an M.2 drive.

In any case you would not be able to use the Windows system you already have installed on the 850 EVO in the new Recoil II. For one thing all the drivers would be wrong but in addition, since Windows configures itself on installation to fit the hardware platform it finds itself on, it likely won't boot at all and even if it does it certainly won't work properly. Even if you do use your existing Samsung 850 EVO SSD you will have to clean install Windows 10 and the Recoil drivers from scratch. Deepening on the way your Windows 10 Pro system is licensed you might also need to buy a new Windows license for the Recoil.

Let's say, don't worry about the windows 10 license. My licence is connected with my account so if I'll erase my ssd I will able to activate it again like a radical hardware change on my laptop.

I'm not an expert about SSDs/HDDs.
Yes, the 850 EVO has a SATA interface, but I don't understand this part "3 x M.2 Ports (1st for WLAN, 2nd for SSD M.2 2280 Card with SATA / PCIe Gen3x4 interface, 3rd for SSD M.2 2280 Card with SATA Interface)".
It's saying "2nd for SSD M.2 2280 Card with SATA / PCIe Gen3x4 interface, 3rd for SSD M.2 2280 Card with SATA Interface", "with SATA interface", so this is not the 850 EVO interface?

Thank you :)

So I believe what ubuysa is saying is that the Samsung 850 Evo drives are usually in a standard SATA 2.5" drive format as opposed to the "newer" M.2 format. While there are SATA M.2 ports (SATA is not just a connection but a type of interface e.g. there are USB 3.1 Type A and Type C ports, both use the same technology but in a different connection) there are also PCIe M.2 devices that can take advantage of new NVMe storage devices that are 4/5 times faster than standard SSDs in some cases.

Essentially, support for your SSD would depend on what kind of 850 Evo you have as the recoil only supports the 1 2.5" drive and with your current plan this would be occupied by the 1TB HDD.

Regarding the connections, all the connections listed in the detailed specification will be available regardless should you wish to install a different drive in future.

As RobPCS has explained, what this (3 x M.2 Ports (1st for WLAN, 2nd for SSD M.2 2280 Card with SATA / PCIe Gen3x4 interface, 3rd for SSD M.2 2280 Card with SATA Interface) means is that there are three M.2 type ports, two of these can be used for different flavours of M.2 SSDs, however your Samsung 850 EVO is not an M.2 device and so won't fit in these ports (and cannot be made to fit via an adapter). There is only one port on the Recoil II that your 850 EVO will fit in and that's the 'Type1 x 7mm, 2.5" S-ATA HDD' port which you intend to populate with a 1TB HDD.

Note: because I'm not familiar with the Samsung 850 EVO I'm using the data for it that I can find online, this indicates it uses a 2.5" SATA HDD port. I do note however that there are M.2 versions of the 850 EVO.

This is a Samsung M.2 850 EVO

This is a Samsung SATA 850 EVO (this is what I think you have)

At the risk of muddying the waters, with the Recoil II you can have either:

A:
1 x 2.5" drive
2 x m.2 sata drives

OR

B:
1 x 2.5" drive
1 x PCIe NVMe SSD

So if your Samsung 850 Evo is a 2.5" drive (the middle photo as per ubuysa's post above) you can install it in the 2.5" bay, as long as you leave the "1[SUP]st[/SUP] Hard Disk" section empty when you order.

As you cannot order a laptop without any storage, you would need to order it with an M.2 SSD. You can have upto 2 M.2 SSDs if they are both sata SSDs, or just 1 SSD if it is a fast NVMe SSD like the 970 Evo.

Does any of this help at all? :)

From this site? Pretty sure PCS have always been clear that they don't allow that since every time someone asks on the forums, we tell them to ask PCS, and they post back to say it wasn't possible.

They put a test HD (big TEST label on it) in it and actually forgot to take it our before shipping. I offered to send it back but they said I could keep it. It was a 500 GB drive so I gave it to my sister.

I am about to order a Recoil ii today if I get the right answer to my query and that again will be without HD.

Now that's interesting, thank you. :)

OK I checked my original email and I had to order with a hard disk and email to tell them to remove it. I wil see if it works again this time. I tried to order the laptop today but they are out of stock.
